water pump orientation

Hey All,

i may have mixed up the orientation of the water pump and housing when i replaced my impeller. Can someone confirm the correct orientation. The pick up hose and the exit hose, which side of center should they be on. Which direction should the impeller blades be deflected. any help would be appreciated

yes I'm still trying to fix my water temp problem. my pump itself might be bad. with the hose disconnected from the thermostat housing from the exit side of the water pump, how much water should the pump be pumping. we disconnected that hose and just let it run into the engine well area. are we talking fire hose or slow garden hose (engine was at idle)

Since you have a LH engine in a 96 Sport Nautique the picture below shows the orientation of the pump. Use the one that says LH(GT40) The diagram is looking at the installed pump from the front of the engine. As soon as you rotate the engine the impeller blades will be lined up right.

But like Pete said, if it's backwards it won't have any flow.

You should get at least a few GPM sucking out of a bucket or the lake/river at idle. If you're hooked to a pressurized hose, that no fair, it'll skew your results.

And don't run very long with all the water going to the bilge cause that means none of the water is going to the exhaust manifolds and you'll start to smell burning rubber on your exhaust hoses.

KENO,   Think I read somewhere that even if you put the impeller in wrong that it should flip over the vanes on it's own.   Looking at my pics I tend to agree. If we need verification then I can go out and try just that by hand as I still have both pumps open. You can go to the Sherwood site and it will give you the GPM. Remember these pumps turn close to crankshaft RPM. That is why they are toast after very few seconds of running dry.

Thanks everyone, I have the orientation correct. I’m thinking that the pump is toast. The angle between the shaft and the pulley in definitely not 90 degrees. Also the is a significant amount of “play” in the shaft when the pulley is moved. The exit hose of the water water pump got VERY hot after a short amount of time and when we pulled the hose, it appeared to be very dry. I believe that I am getting water to the bottom side of the pump because there is water in the hose when we disconnected it.
