Leak at Rudder

   I have some water coming in around my rudder box. Two of the corners around the box have busted fiberglass sheets which I will patch. I have taken the 4 bolts out that hold the rudder in place. On the bottom side of the boat the square plate is loose and I am able to inspect. There is no damage or issue at the underside of the boat. It appears that there was some sort of thin square seal/gasket on the under side and I can see where the seal is broken and water may be coming in. 

My question for you all is whether there is some sort of seal/gasket part that I need to order, or if if this is something that I can just clean off with a razor blade / sand paper and then put some M3 5200 around and put it back together?

Does anyone have any similar experience with this that can point me in the right direction?

	Rob, I'm sure what you may think is a gasket is just a bedding compound like silicone. Make the repair, clean up the area and bed the port in 4200.

	And while you're at it, read the thread in the link below and do some inspecting while things are loose right now to make sure you don't have any issues like Beardo 73 had in the linked thread. It's easier to look now at the inside and outside of the hole for the rudder port and make sure you don't have any delamination/rotten wood issues to deal with. He thought he had a steering cable problem but it turned into much more. link

	Thanks Pete and Ken. It is nice to have a sanity check to make sure I do the repair correctly. Thanks for the link, I will check it out. This is another "new to me used boat" so I have been uncovering issues to say the least. Best to do it once and do it right! Thanks again!

	For anyone looking to do this in the future, I found this link from Discount Inboard Marine skidim.com on how to perform a rudder rebuild on a Supra. I plan to follow this as I attempt on my 88 Sierra Supreme. Repairing a older style rudder port

	Here is a link to the pictures I have so far. Seems like I have a fairly generic rudder housing. So the link from the Supra forum has been an excellent resource. Rudder Refresh Photos After removing the rudder it was clear that the seal on the hull of the boat was the culprit. After taking apart the housing since I already have the rudder off per Pete and Ken's suggestion I cleaned the housing and replaced the O-RINGS. It appears that the inner part of the housing has been pretty worn, however I did not previously notice any leaks above the floor of the boat when inspecting while in the water. The old O-rings were still intact although worn out and flat. Has anyone else had any experience with the inner rudder housing being worn and putting it back together? I am hoping not to have to buy a whole rudder assembly as that is fairly pricey. Should I just go ahead and replace to save future headaches? I hope to upgrade to a V-Drive in the next 2-3 years, but don't necessarily want to pass along the problem. Anyone know where I can buy a new rudder housing without buying a full assembly? The rudder is 1 1/8" diameter. The housing has a 4" x 4" base with a height of 2 1/2" from the base to the tiller arm. Thanks, Rob

	Update. I called over to Marine Hardware and Ron was very helpful. He verified that they made the original part and set me up with the correct replacement part. I will post pictures of the completed installation.
