Guys

so just wondering..on my 1993 SN...I've notice that my boat turns fairly easy to the right, but takes a bit more effort when turning to the left. How easy should steering be both ways? Now, my boat is a 1993, so I am assuming it's the original steering controls as well. Is there a way (or place) to grease or lubricate the steering to make it smoother/easier to turn the wheel?   Just want to make "general stiffness" steering either way easier, if possible.

Thanks for any advice.

I do believe that your steering will be easier in one direction than the other based on the force of the prop wash. Not sure which way is easier or harder but, that is the concept. I am sure others smarter than me will chime in.

As it relates to lubing the steering cable, I lubed my '87 Martinique original steering cable over the winter two years back. When I got the boat, it had very stiff steering. I hung it up in my basement with both ends up in the floor joists so it formed a big "U". I sprayed various lubes (silicone, moly, etc) as well as things like PB Blaster to free it up. I sprayed these lubes all winter long and worked the cable occasionally. It worked beautifully.

The cable now turns VERY freely now, and has given me 1 1/2 summers of trouble free use. But, in the middle of the summer, not sure you have the luxury of time now. You may want to get a new cable to get you safely through the rest of this summer, especially if use it in severe conditions (private lake slalom course/ski school).   Your current cable may not stand up to those stresses. Safety is first!

yeah...no slalom courses, or ski school here.....just on the lake with my kids skiing behind or wake boarding. Yeah, I understand the force of water on the rudder when going in and out of a turn...so not really concerned about that either...just the general "stiffness" of turning left or right. It's not super bad....like I can still turn with one hand, but it's certainly NOT "one finger easy".

Steering is typically easier in one direction over the other due to direction of prop rotation. Plus, if a slalom skier owned the boat at some point the rudder is probably “tuned” to give more positive pressure on the right side to help in driving through the slalom course. My 93 is tuned and I prefer it that way. Check for indications of grinding on one side of the rudder. And as I steering snob I would go ahead and change the cable out and grease and repack rudder port for the heck of it. 93 is a bastard year so I recommend changing helm out to the newer style, it’ll save you money next time.

Orlando...can you point me to the "Newer" style of steering cable, hardware? I think I'll update in the off season, this fall.

I think:

And
https://www.skidim.com/prodinfo.asp?number=TELSSC15420

But call Vince at SkiDim to verify because it sounds like something has changed again.

“ 1982-1990 Correct Craft's use a proprietary 17-1/2' cable that is only available from a CC dealer. 1991-92 use a Morse rotary 19-1/2' and 93-97 use an old style Teleflex rack 19-1/2'. The current Teleflex HPS 20' rack will work for 93-97 Nautique's but you need the 98 up helm.
* Steermaster MK III cables are NLA, the Uflex Rotary System is our replacement and requires you to enlarge the mounting hole in the dash (These were common on 80's Supra, Mastercraft, some Ski Supreme).”

I am looking to cure my 91 nautique "hard steering" issue as well. I am thinking just go ahead and replace the cable. My question is how intense of a job is this? Is this a DIY or should I take it in somewhere? Any input is much appreciated as always.

Thanks,

Gary

Nevermind folks. I found a detailed post from Bri892001 on this. Very detailed to say the least. Thanks for posting that.

Assuming BLUE not RED Loctite correct? Also assuming you are talking about the bolts when reattaching the "bar"?

Thanks,

Blue. Bolts holding helm through dash and then cable on rack as well. Once I didn’t do it... once.
