Gang,

Here is an update and a couple of questions. I pulled the transmission because I have a ton of trans fluid in the bell housing which must be from a front seal leak, right? The transmission is out and the front oil pump has been opened. Darn, if those two seals don't look perfect. There isn't any other way for the trans fluid to leak into the bell housing is there?

Bottle Jacks worked great under the water jackets. I loosed the front motor mount lag bolts about 1/2" and removed the back 6 motor mount lag screws in order to tilt the motor about 2.5" needed to pull the trans. I wasn't going to unbolt the motor mount from the stringer, but there was no way to get a 5/8" socket or wrench on the lower motor mounts attached to the trans. So, I pulled the whole thing, trans and motor mounts. I would have needed some special tool to turn those as the casting was in the way. Crazy engineering there.

I will put the two new seals back in and shine up the shaft to if this helps. Still can't believe I was loosing that much trans fluid through these seals as they looked perfect???

I am also considering pulling the bell housing and damper plate. Is there someway to check to see if the damper plate is good or bad?

I would certainly replace the damper plate while it’s apart.

How do I match the damper plate as there is no part number on it? Is it part of the velvet drive parts list? As1-71c?

One of these in the link below will work ALTDA-106A

link

Or from the same outfit you can get a ALTDA-106 that needs trimming but saves you 20 bucks or so

A lot of people on CCF have used them, they're high quality and the price is reasonable .

You might find them for less on EBAY at times

How hot should that trans be to the touch? I installed new cooler and thermostat. The motor is running about 130 degrees but the trans is real hot to the touch.

Borg Warner calls an oil temperature of 140 degrees normal.

Depending on the daintiness of your fingers that might or might not feel real hot to the touch You don't keep your hand on 140 degree metal for very long, at least I don't.
I'm kinda dainty maybe

An IR gun would be helpful for a temperature reading.

The cooling water entering the cooler is basically the same as the lake/river temperature before it ever goes to the engine

For some real world temperatures on a BW71C, me and my IR gun checked some transmission temperatures this morning.

After about an hour of use, the IR gun said the casing was at about 130 degrees and my finely calibrated hand seemed to agree with that number

I could hold my hand on it without much problem.

Different day, different usage, different water temperatures could all affect that number a little , but I'd say it's a good representative number.

I ordered a heat gun and will know more soon. Next issue is going to be the gas tank as I have lots of junk in the line which is causing the boat to act up after about ten minutes of pounding on it. Blowing out the fuel filter and clearing the check valve solves the problem. Also, was totally surprised by the operation of the thermostat. I earlier removed the thermostat in order to get the boat to run cooler. My observation as to what was the water dump to the exhaust vs by pass to the block was backwards. Installing the thermostat caused not only the opening of water to the block, but closing of water to the exhaust. And like I said, the hoses were completely backwards to what I thought based on the cooling diagrams. Anyways, here is the latest video. https://youtu.be/qTdJONFIzgU
