Hi All,
Looking for assistance in finding the right battery I need for a 1976 Ski Nautique. The service manual says the minimum requirements are: 12v Marine Type, Tapered Post Connectors, 70 amp-hr minimum rating. Would this battery work? EverStart Lead Acid Marine & RV Deep Cycle Battery, Group Size 24DC (12 Volt/690 MCA)If not, what specifically do I need to look for in a battery. Deep Cycle? Crank? Etc. All help is much appreciated. Thanks, James

Good inquiry
No deep cycle, unless you have a trolling motor and like slow, labored starts. No 24v battery unless you want to burn up the electrical system. So, std cranking battery, 750-825 CCA , 12v |

Thanks for the advice. Having a hard time finding something with those specs that isn't expensive.
Would a car battery work? Do you have a link to an example?

Yes, automotive starting is a great choice. The cost of lead has gone up so they are getting pricey.

It'll work just fine and it's pretty easy to find a 25% discount coupon for a computer order from Advance Auto. It might be too tall unless you modify the battery box cover though. Order and pay with PayPal, charge card etc, walk in the store and they hand you the battery Check the height of the battery and your battery compartment. It might be a little too tall for the compartment.

By the way, I guess you don't really want any of those PDF's you were looking for a few days ago or you would have sent an e mail to the guy in your other post

I actually found the initial PDF I needed after some searching! I may need the other ones in the future, but currently I've got what I need. I appreciate it though and have noted the email in case I need the other ones

James, Why the "marine" battery? Do you actually need the terminal studs and the lugs? The word "marine" on anything automatically increases the price!

Don’t know if all advance autos are the same but keep an eye out on the date code of the battery. They tried passing off a year old battery on me once. Just bought one from O’Relies for my truck that was dated this month....

I have purchased my batteries from Sam's Club for several years. They work, nothing special but they work and price is reasonable.
I have found over the years that the batteries with higher cranking amps also have more lead plates inside. Good for extra power but in a boat those larger plates can start banging around and short out. The lesser power batteries don't seem to have that issue. I would still want something with at least 650 CCA so you have enough power on hand. The old flat bottom Nautiques can be rough when the water is not nice, it is hard on your battery.

You probably would also want to consider using the group 65 battery. It’s size fits well in the battery locker on that vintage cc.

Mark, On my very flat bottom very hard riding X55, I too learned this lesson. Years back I went though 3 high CCA batteries (around 1000) in 4 years then, I learned what was going on. With all the lead plates in the high CCA batteries taking up the space that support was less so they were breaking and shorting. Yes, bigger is not always better.
