Looking for some help here because this issue has not happened to me before... I went to winterize my 1997 Super Sport w GT40 this morning and the battery was pretty much dead. The motor turned over but not enough to fire it up until the starter would just click. So I hooked up my booster/jump pack to the battery and tried starting again... same result except this time even with key in the off position the starter solenoid was clicking... so i removed the key still clicking, pull the kill switch lanyard still clicking... I finally removed the ground cable going to the battery and no more clicking...
I grab another fully charged battery and swap over the cables and as soon as i put the ground wire on neg terminal bigger normal spark and clicking again... The boat had no issues all summer - ran perfect. Its been sitting for about 2 weeks since it last ran. Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you

I am not an expert...but I had a similar problem when I was winterizing the boat a few years back. I had dropped the boat in the barn without plugging it in; went back a few weeks later and tried to start the boat to winterize...due to the low battery voltage my starter relay fused in the on position. Apparently, this is common and I found a few threads here as I was diagnosing the problem. The starter would spin as long as battery was hooked up.
So, I think you may have fried your starter relay solenoid and that is why it starts clicking as soon as you connect a battery. |

thanks Wes1089! That makes total sense. I did not have a chance to go trouble shooting yet because of a 5hr zoom sales meeting I'm stuck on currently... :o( but I will check that out later today!
thanks again |

It sounds like your problem is somewhat different that Wes1089's problem since his starter constantly turned with the fused or welded together contacts in the slave solenoid/relay.
Your description is that you put in a fully charged battery and the starter solenoid is clicking with the key out of the ignition but the starter doesn't turn. Since your boat would have the newer PMGR starter, Is the clicking solenoid the one on the starter itself or the one mounted to the engine near the fuel pump and ECM relays? |
