I spent 15 mins searching for this question as I imagine that it has been asked before but I could not find anything.

I am finishing up my 3 year restoration of my 96 Sport Nautique. I need to put new carpet on the fiberglass base of the 2 part clamshell engine cover base. The old carpet pretty much disintegrated so I don't have a template. I am handy and have done most of the rest of the restoration myself including a lot of finishing fiberglass work that turned out amazing.

I've got a lot of stuff both personally and work on the go right now. In my mind this seems like a project that may either A) get time consuming and/or B) look like crap when I'm done. My base is the style with the 2 cup holders and the storage cutout that extends out othe rear of the engine cover. All the curves and rounded corners concern me.

Here is my question...is it easier than it seems? Can I tackle it in a long afternoon and it look good. I would be willing to try that. Or is it something I should just find a shop to do where I drop of the base and have them figure it out?

If it is very doable, any how-to tips?

Thoughts?!

Thank you for asking this question.  I have a 91 SN and the PO just covered the doghouse with vinyl.  the vinyl around the base is coming loose and I want to redo all the vinyl, but don't know how the carpet was originally attached?  Is it stitched to the vinyl then glued to the doghouse?  Is there additional hardware that my boat just doesn't have that the carpet attached to?

Definitely not trying to hijack your thread.

I got carpet from CS marine when I did my base on my 2000 ski. It’s a funny shape and i was able to use the carpet I took off as a pattern. It is a perfect color match and I got extra, because I had to raise my cover to fit the 409.
They will send you small swatch to match with.

A few years back I change on carpet out of the boat also. And I knew I would have to have an upholstery shop to do the bottom part of the dog house since it to had carpet at the bottom. The piping and vinyl is sewn into the carpet and I knew I didn’t had any experience in doing that kind of work. I little beyond of “I could do that.” Believe me it’s worth the price to have someone else doing that project.

Mine has no piping involved in the carpet. Its just carpet glued to the fiberglass. I called around and no one is willing to do the job until next winter. So I'll be tackling it. Has no one done this project?

I can get the original carpet from Nautique parts. It comes in 16 oz (original) and 32 oz (used in newer boats). I'm interested in going with the 32 oz so that its thicker and may be more forgiving since there will be more pile thickness to cover seams.

Thoughts on the 16 vs 32oz?

I did mine with the heavier stuff from cs marine. I used a good outdoor carpet glue from Home Depot or the like. Was really fairly easy. Hardest part was putting the hardware back on once I was reassembling it.
Also have a bunch of hand clamps on hand with some small strips of wood ( I used 12”shims) to clamp the carpet down while it dries where it folded over the edges
