HELP!! The original paint on my 1982 SN 2001 is completely faded and missing color in several places. What is the best way to completely remove ALL of the original paint (It's a wide, very faded gray stripe with a very faded SN logo on top)? Has anyone here done this themselves? What was your final result?
I'm thinking after I remove all the original paint, I will keep it simple and just put on 2 new, two-color SN decals on the side and the Correct Craft Competition Ski Boat on the back, along with new flag stickers. |

Maybe a picture would help...
'82 2001 was originally 3-color stripe painted on the gel-coat finish. Tape stripes/decals were added. I refinished my '82 by sanding entire hull bare with 800/1000/1200, then heavy compound, polish, re-paint.

It's likely NOT paint, but rather "gelcoat". Gelcoat can fade over time -- particularly when exposed to the sun's rays. There are plenty of good threads on this site where boat owners have had good success with refinishing their fiberglass and gelcoat. The process usually consists of wet-sanding followed by buffing, polishing and then waxing. Below is a link from 3M that explains the process with their products.

Jonny
I don't think you have much experience with an 82 SN. ![]() The stripes like already mentioned are paint, over the base gelcoat. For L'il Nauti............it might sound strange, but EZ Off Oven Cleaner works good to remove the paint without affecting the gelcoat underneath. You could try a small test spot just to give you some assurance that it works

Damn. Well shut my mouth. What are we dealing with here…Bayliners? Paint over gelcoat?! What’s next? Reverse rotation engines? Synthetic oil?

Bayliners..........no, an 82 Bayliner had the colors in the gelcoat on the multi color hulls
![]() Lil' Nauti there are lots of paint strippers that work also and don't turn your fiberglass hull into a pile of soft, molten gooey mush Same comment as before, try it on a small spot first. |

If you're using an iPhone you have to use an upload host like Imgbb.
