Guys- My GT40 fiberglass exhaust pipes are leaking. Looks like previous owner ran it hot at some time, water pump impeller was basically gone when I bought it, and thermostat was missing. The pipe is cracked at the lower right elbow into the silencer. Am wondering about replacing the fiberglass parts with custom welded 3inch SS. There are 2 4inch silencers with an H-tube between them, I can see clear through them. I have it temporarily repaired for this season.
Just wondering if it will be too LOUD with straight SS pipes.

I guess you'd have to define too LOUD and too LOUD for who, and then think about where and how you use the boat and maybe post a picture or 2 of what you have now for an exhaust system. Is this on your 95 Hydrodyne? Listen to an old 70's CC, MC with no mufflers and compare that to your noise level now, I think you'll find a pretty good difference, especially for anybody in the back seat, behind the boat or on shore..  |

Requested pictures
Exhaust elbow is cracked where rubber hose from engine is clamped. Inside of fiberglass tube looks like charred wood. I was able to shove the rubber hose past the crack and re-clamp. Not leaking now, but may be a disaster in waiting. The 4inch silencer has no baffles inside, don't know how much difference they make in the exhaust sound. I want to replace the silencers and the H-Pipe with 3inch stainless. The charred fiberglass inside the exhaust is kinda scary to me.

Hi guys, sorry if I have 2 questions that don't match the thread, but since I have the same boat I would be interested in the following: what is the weight that is attached to the steering cable bracket for? looks the same to me, and I don't know what purpose this part serves. 2. The weight is a vibration dampener, I saw it in a Hydrodyne add from 1995, gonna look and try to find the add again.
The H-Pipe is from the hot rod community, used to be common for performance cars before X-Pipes came around. I don't know if it is original or not. Actually, Keno posted some links to Waterski Magazine by year. 1995 Waterski Magazine buyers guide is there. There is a picture of the dampener in the Hydrodyne add.

Thank you for the info, now I'm a bit smarter again, I love my Hydrodyne with my great GT-40 engine.
 I switched to a 4 blade prop this year (13x13) and it runs much smoother than before with the 3 blade. it's just a pity that wakesurfing isn't possible with it. but it is also a water ski boat.here is a picture of my baby ....but now I don't want to disturb the thread anymore. I realize the tubes can be fixed with fiberglass, but mine looks like there was a fire in it. It's charred really bad. I don't trust it and wanted to know if anyone has welded up some stainless and run straight pipes.

Since LOUD is such a subjective thing and a real sensitive subject to some people around here, I kinda figure that if you wondering if it will be too LOUD.............it probably will be too LOUD Check the out SS silencers in the Hardin Marine link below. They should last well and lower the noise level and take the bark out of the exhaust. You'll need some more rubber hose, but if somebody had a barbecue in your exhaust system like you mention, it's a good idea to get new hose anyways, unless you already did |

Thanks for the link. The thermostat was missing and the impeller only had 1 vane when I bought it. Also had a misfire, the seller thought I was trying to sell some BS to get the price down. Anyways, sometime in the past, the exhaust got really hot. I'm thinking that I can weld some stainless to replace the elbows and the H-pipe, then maybe mufflers, then hose on back to the outlets. May try it without mufflers to see how loud it is. The way its set up now really sounds good across the lake
