It was my birthday yesterday, so I went to the river for an evening therapy session.  We found a guy launching his nice MC, but he backed in too deep and the trailer wheels dropped off the concrete pad.  It was really stuck.  He called for help and a wrecker came.  However, I feared if they simply yanked it out, they'd destroy the trailer.  I'd seen this problem on misc ramp folly videos, so knew the solution was to lift the trailer, but the crowd of slack-jawed, nay-saying gawkers was causing in paralysis by analysis.  Finally, my buddy & I jumped in and demonstrated we could actually lift the trailer.  We gave it a go and his Traverse easily pulled it out in creeper gear.

Takeaways were not to back in too far; the buoyancy effect on trailer weight and; not to get in the way of a man's ski run on his birthday.

Sorry I didn't think to take pics of his trailer fiasco, but here's me succeeding!!!

I have been at boat ramps where guys were sitting with lawn chairs and an ice chest holding flash cards.  As you launched they would hold up numbers from 1-10 judging how good you were.   There is always funny stuff going on at a boat ramp.  Sounds like the guy you helped might have been a 0.
At our favorite launch place the boat ramp has been taken over by kayakers.   They actually pull down on the ramp unload the kayak and start blowing it up on the ramp.  This is a 30 minute process and they think they are in the right doing this.   Did I mention they do not have to pay to launch.  We have to pay $22 to launch and have the launch blocked by these bozo's.   Oh well. off subject.

Back to your Birthday.  Happy Birthday, glad you got out and enjoyed it.

Another option we have used in the past is to use a rope under the trailer and over the boat then pull it tight so as to lift the trailer to the height of the boat and then drive ahead.  Glad you guys got it sorted out and Happy Birthday.

Same at my marina... LOL
We do have some specialists over here that need 20 minutes with three guys to load/unload their boats.
Best time of the week: Sundays around 11 AM and around 5 PM. Just sit on the bench near the ramp with a brew in hand and enjoy.

Replying late to the thread ....

John, way to go in helping that guy out.  I try to always offer help at ramps if I'm waiting, especially for older folk (like my age Big smile ).  It's definitely a scene that is never boring.

I try to be patient, not everyone is experienced, not everyone is logical in how they go about it, but most people are just trying to have a fun day on the water, or are at the end of a fun day.  Yes, I've run into occasional aholes that know it all and hold up the ramp, but mostly what I see is if people are uptight it's because they are nervous or embarassed, just need some cheerful help.

Back to John's experience, I've backed off a couple of ramps over the years, when water was lower and I didn't realize how far back on the ramp I was.  I've been able to yank the trailer out without damage, I think in both cases rather than the wheels hanging they were on a muddy bottom behind the ramp so there was some rubber to bear against the ramp end.  Not fun.

Our river has been low all year.  There are 4 bays at our launch and as a regular we know never to use #4 at low water.  They should just block access to it because it eats trailer axles.

Couple weeks ago as we were coming in there was a tandem trailer off the edge,  they already had a circus around them offering free advice.  Ours was lift it don't pull it.  They chose pull it and ripped the front set of axles right off.  We always offer to help...once.

I am the same, I will offer help, when they inform me they know what they are doing I let them prove it.  No need to argue with experts!   I hate to see people wreck good equipment for no reason.
