the gas gauge on my 2001 196 decided not to function this year. The needle sits on empty no matter what. Used it this summer by monitoring hrs and adding gas 5 or 10 gals at a time. Our season is over so it is time to look into it.
Does anyone have experience troubleshooting the sending unit pictured here. Does this disconnect at the point the wiring enters or does it unplug from the unit as the larger square area? There is no corrosion anywhere in the wiring and not sure what kind of resistance or voltage one would find at the gauge connections. Help would be appreciated. It appears I have the L shaped tank which will require the more $$ sending unit so it would be advantageous to know it is that unit for sure. |

The most likely culprit is the sending unit. The connections for the sending unit is likely hidden inside the wire "loom" -- that black corrugated plastic tube thingy. That sending unit can be easily replaced by removing the screws. A new sending unit should also include a new washer to seal up the fuel tank.

First, test the gauge.

Thanks for the info. I traced the wiring from the sending unit. It was wrapped around/under the threaded rod for the lifting ring. Cut the wiring and tested continuity back to dash and also the sending unit side with an ohmeter.
Both the black and the pink wire have continuity from back to dash. The reading on the sending unit is 241 ohms, so thinking that is where the issue is. I guess I will pull it to see what sending unit I will need. |

My 2000 Ski Nautique has the same issue. I removed the sending unit, moved the float up and down and verified that the gauge works, waiting for the new sending unit from Nautique parts. Apparently 2000 and 2001 Nautiques have a different shaped tank so the sending unit reads differently. It is more expensive than similar units and I don't know if it is absolutely necessary. Others may know more.
"Fuel Sender, calibrated for 2000-2001 Ski Nautique (meaning that this sender does not read full to empty on a straight line but on a curved scale due to the special shape of the tank.)"
