I took the 289 out of my 68 mustang CC today and I'm in the market for a stock rebuild kit rings bearings etc any ideas

check Summit they have a rebuild kit by sealed power that is good. It comes with everything you will need, pistons, rings, bearings, gasket set and more for about $400. I would go with flatops and a high vol oil pump, not high pressure, you dont want leaks. Why stock???

Keep us posted on how that rebuild goes. I just got my new engine stand and I am about to yank the 289 out of my '66.

(PS: In my world "about to" means sometime during the next two years)

What they said, and you can check this site/company I've seen on ebay regarding a marine rebuild kit:

Many of those companies will swap certain items such as piston types, cams, etc., to suite your preference, without affecting the kit price as long as you stay away from the big aftermarket HiPo names. And of course I'm with MaddMarxx on the "why stock" issue, as you will enjoy this boat even more with 250 HP compared to the original 165-190HP 2V or 210HP 4V engine and suffer no drive' or durability issues whatsoever.

Reidp ,gotta agree with you,if there is a lot of hours on that motor.Boring is in the cards,why spend any money on that 289,upgrade to a 302 or for a little more money he can go with the stroker 331 or 347.Same dependability and more torque not to mention HP............boat dr

My experience with Felpro is that the gaskets work and they have excellent tech support. Their engineers answer the phone and they speak English. They also know marine stuff.

Jim & Tim,have not had any problems with their products, just have gotten to the point in my life that says buy OEM.If you compare the head gaskets,PCM vs. Felpro you will see a difference in the weight and the material.I don't gamble with my clients weekends,and cannot change out a gasket ,in labor costs,for the amount or possible engine damage.Kinda like some guys will buy premium oil(Castrol,Rotella,ETC) and buy an after market filter(Fram or Walley World) just my head overruleing my checkbook........boat dr

Any smart person "in the business" would do the same boat dr. Just gotta stay with OEM, good or bad, for liability issues....

I face this in my industrial electronics components business every day. If I save my customer a hundred bucks or so by buying an identical part from Radio Shack rather than the OEM and it craps out who ends up looking ugly? I do.

now there are times where OEM has known problems and an aftermaket company makes it better. Not often, but it has happened.
