I have a friend that bought a 2001 a while back. The boat will not run over 120 degrees and misses. When my friend checked the themostat, it was not there. Why would the thermostat be gone? Also the timing has been advanced, why would this be?

Someone has obviously removed the thermostat. Perhaps it failed to open or was obstructed and instead of replacing it they decided to remove it. And perhaps the same person advanced the timing in hopes to gain back some performance that was lost by running the engine too cold. Your friend didn't buy this boat new, right? Tell him/her to install a new thermostat, set the timing, maybe change the plugs and go from there.

boat was not bought new. However, he just bought it recently. I was wondering if the removed thermostat was done to hide bigger problems such as the boat running hot?

Matt,if the engine had a blown head gasket or a cracked block(improper winterization)it would still run hot even without the thermostat.I agree with nutty, buy a oem thermstat,i think it is a 140 degree, new Autolite plugs timing set to specs and go from there............ boat dr
