Some how the control cable thread conjurred up this story out of my memory.
When I was young my faimly was in the marine boat business(mid 60's)I worked many a saturday back in the shop doing what I could usually rigging new boats, being the helperv etc.Well one day this guy comes in looking for an old Sea King lower unit.My Uncle Monty says I think so,If I have one I"ll take a fifty for it,guy says OK.We go out to this old shed in back and hanging on the wall is exactly the right one.Monty carries it in,pulls it open installs new impellor buttons it up and turns to the guy,This guy said I'll give ya twenty five.....Monty never said a thing he carried that unit back out to the shed hung it on the wall, guy is saying "OK,OK I'll give ya the Fifty"."Nope not for sale, it can hang there forever but you'll never buy one here". And as far as I ever remember till the day he sold that shop that lower unit hung on the wall. Those were good days, old boat shop was fun for a pre-teen boy.Made good money and learned alot about life. Munday, the things you remember and they stick with you, It takes all kinds on the other side of the coin if you tell a guy 50 he gives you the 50 and a extra 10. people are just different.
Usually when i give a price to someone lets say 100 they say 90 and then I say 110... end of conversation, i got the 100 it ends the haggling on the spot, it works |

I always give the mechanics that work on our boat an extra $25 - $100, depending on the job. They have saved our family's boating outings several times with prompt service. Here in Minnesota, we appreciate every day on the water.

I thought tipping the mechanic was a thing of the past (im on the recieving end) you popped my memory road king, i did a guys boat on statten island, nice guy didnt say much, before i left he asked for my address, a week later i got a thank you card and a check for believe or not $500.00. It seems like the guys with old money want to keep it and the guy who started with nothing like the guy above will give you a tip and say nice job
