I bought an 89 2001 last summer and without knowing much history figured I should probably replace the fuel filter this spring. It looks like I currently have a FRAM fcs1136m - picture below. First time for me here - do I need to unbolt it? Does the black cannister unscrew...? Also unclear what specifically I'm replacing. Any safety precautions - I assume I need to cut off the supply of gas first? Your help is appreciated. Thanks!

CCS1136 is the correct filter number. You are replacing the filter inside. Remove the hoses, remove the canister from the bracket, drain it through the plug on the bottom, put the top in a vise and turn the bottom off. It will be hard to turn because of the spring inside. Put the new filter in and put all the parts back together with a new gasket. Some gas may drip out of the hose but I have never had a problem with it pouring out.

is it just a fuel fliter?..on my 94 i have a fuel/h20 seperator..mine does unscrew....ask eric boat dr bkh one of those guys, they will know...got an owners manual?..download one here for free

It is a fuel/water separator. The filter inside is meant to be replaced, not the whole canister.

You can replace the system. There are plenty of aftermarket fuel water separators that are screw on like an oil filter. Only thing, they don't have that drain for the water. So, when they are saturated with water, the engine stops working. Just replace each season and it should be okay.

there are two different styles like was mention and some times the replaceable element can be a pain to locate where as the screw in types are easy to find locally.

At a minimum once a year. Do it as part of your winterizing (unless you are lucky enough to live where you dont have to do that). But if you run a lot of hours each season you may replace it more often (spin on type). You can drain the water from the old style.

I'm finally getting around to replacing the filter this weekend. Anything to do after I've replaced it/re-installed the canister? Prime?

install hand tight ONLY with some white grease on the seal, you can fill with fresh gas to avoid cranking

Agreed. I was careful to put that back together this evening. It was a beast to get it apart. Even with a vise and strap wrench, had to resort to a few whacks with a hammer...
