ok so I read the post about no spark when cranking but spark when turned off and my situation similar but a little different. I have a 86 martinique. I have a new coil, new wires and brand new electronic conversion, and I have 12 volts at the coil. and my rotor turns. Just to clarify I have no spark when cranking but spark when the key turns off Please Help! The boat stop running last year, and I was hoping it was just the points. I installed the new coil, wires, elec. conversion and it still did not fire. It sounded like it wanted too and then it backfired, and nothing since.

Again, you are getting a constant ground to the NEG terminal on the coil. Either a case like this usually means points or a module thats shorted. Make sure there is no shorts in the wire or insulator thats in the distributor.

thanks jeff. I have the electronic igition conversion and there are only two wires a red one that goes to the + on the coil and a black one that goes to the - on the coil. I also have the a purple wire coming from the ballast (which I bypassed, red from 40 circuit breaker and purple connectted together)going to the + of the coil and a grey wire on the - of the coil.
(coil has internal resistor) |

there should have been two purple wires going to the ballast resistor one on each end if not then someone have screwed with the wiring and has it wrong. The feed from the breaker should not go directly to the ballast resistor |

I spent 3 days messing with points and coils, it was 2 situations for weak spark and intermiitant running. on one the tach was shorting the coil and the other the NEW condensor was bad. on both i wouldve never thought possible...just something to look for

79nautique, I somehow missed your above post in here.. my wiring is as follows. from the block where the postive cable from battery goes I have a red wire that goes to the 40 amp breaker on the other side of the greaker I have 2 red wires one I don't know where it goes (i think wiring harness, I have to look again) the other one use to go to one side of ballast and then a purple wire from the other side of ballast giong to + of coil. (these are connected together now) If this is wrong can you tell me where that red wire from the 40amp should go and where the purple wire Im missing should come from?
Thanks Trev |

well in 79nautiques post he stated that my wiring is wrong. that I should not have a red wire coming from my breaker going to the ballast, and that I should have a purple wire connected to both sides of ballast. I explained what my wiring is in my previous post but did not get a response on how to fix it.
So my question is how should it be wired. were does the purple wire come from and where should the red wire from the breaker go ? Thanks |

Take a look at this, it may help:
It should be noted that the connection between the green, purple and red wires (for the alt exciter, ign feed and choke, respectively) are not tied together physically at the ballast resistor. I believe the connections are made internal to the wiring harness. Same goes for the grounds. |
