I am not sure if the dip stick on my 1985 351 PCM is original or not. I just got the boat last fall. the dip stick has two sets of min and max level marks on it. One is the original all the way at the very end tip. The others were etched manually with the min mark about an inch higher then the other max mark.

Can anyone with an 85 or equivelant tell me how long from where the stick connects to the handle to the max mark? Or any other ways to ensure that I am keeping the oil at the correct level?

The dipstick question comes up every once in a while. The angle these motors sit at can throw off the original marks.

Next time you change your oil and filter, fill it with 4 quarts. Run the motor the a few minutes to fill the filter. Turn it off wait 5 minutes. Check the dipstick, the oil level on the stick will be your add oil mark. Add the fifth quart, run the engine again for a few minutes, shut it down and let it sit for 5 minutes again. Check the oil level on the stick, that will be your full mark.

I also have an '85 with a PCM 351. The measurements of the dipstick are:

base of handle to "full" mark- 17"
base of handle to "add" mark- 17 3/4"
base of handle to tip of dirstick- 18 1/2"

The dipstick also has a number stamped into it-    R-041032 M
I don't know if thats a part #, but it might you help with identification. My engine is at the full mark with only 4 quarts of oil in it. According to the PCM manual, that is the correct capacity. Hope this helps.

Yes 4 quarts plus one for the filter.

Thanks much. Had to put the cover on last night for a storm coming through. Will compare the measurements tomorrow. The oil volume helps greatly.
