Eric, I had my Tique out for the first time yesterday and have a bad vibration shifting into reverse. After shifting into neutral and then into reverse again the vibration isn't as bad. No slipage in ether forward or revarse. I'm thinking a broken spring or two in the damper plate. My 312 bell hosing has a real nice inspection port that I was able to look in and see pieces of springs but the 302 doesn't have one. Any ideas?

Pete, 71c i imagine, with a bad damper you would get more noise then vibration and if the dampers are bad usually when you raise the rpm's the noise will dis appear.
these trannies are known for snapping the reverse plates but i did a trans for Ron's marine years ago and the reverse plates snapped 3 times and was assured they were'nt high rpm shifting, it ended up being a bad damper plate and a miss in the engine as far as i could finally figure out, the torsionals can snap these plates and i have recieved transmissions with snapped plates in them and they were still operational its just that the customer noticed a problem in reverse. I do have snap proof plates, but run the boat until you can diagnose exactly what is going on, if there is damage its already there, make sure it isnt drive line related and so on. if you do pull the trans i would put in a damper anyways |

Eric, As always I appreciate your input. Now that you mention it, the problem is more of a noise than a vibration. I didn't try a higher RPM in reverse but in forward the boat runs fine. It does have what I would refer to as the normal harmonics especially since the foam was not put back in when the stringers were replaced. The drive line was the first thing I checked. I will run it and keep a eye on it. It's going up to northern Wisconsin for it's permanant home on memorial day weekend.

Eric, I was going to wait until I got my Tique up north and in the water again so I could get some time on it to diagnose the noise problem. Then I thought this is stupid to wait so I just got done pulling the bell housing off to check the damper plate. Unlike my 312 were the damper plates springs were open and the broken springs were obvious, this plate has enclosed springs. However, I found the center splined hub to be loose. I was going to put a new one in anyway as long as I had it opened up. Are there differences in plates say from different manufacturers? I'm just planing on getting one from Skidim and it does look like the one I have now with the enclosed spring pockets. Do you ever put any never-seize on the splines?

Eric, The internet is a amazing tool! I just did a search and did find the open spring damper plate is a Sachs. I don't know who makes the enclosed spring from Skidim. Any thoughts?

Pete, alot of the hubs are loose, but the springs will start to get weak, inspect it very closely, your going to replace anyways.
I use the sachs plates, 26 spline input and i use grease on the splines instead of anti sieze, Which one do you need? snap a picture... |
