Need assistance with Transmission leak.
In my 82 Nautique. I pulled tranny and engine out last winter for motor rebuild and the tranny did not leak last year. Yesterday I started the rebuild for the first time. WOW ! everything was going well until I noticed transmission fluid leaking around the shaft area where the forward/reverse selecter is mounted. I took off the selector lever and removed the ball bearing poppit & spring. Re started the engine and looked closer and it appears to be coming from where the outer shaft or bushing is pressed in the housing. What could this be? Can I fix it with the tranny in the boat ? Any help is appreciated. My Transmission is: Borg Warner 71 Series / Velvet Drive Model 107003 Serial # 424 1:1 Thanks Dennis H |

OK Fixed it.....
1. Removed the nuetral Safety switch wires 2. Removed Transmission hose in front of cover plate. 3. Pumped out tranny oil with drill pump 4. Removed 3 Bolts holding the cover on and removed the cover plate. Behind the cover plate is another plate with a tab on it that faces down. Removed that. 5. Pushed the Oil diverter shaft twords the safety switch side to remove the complete unit. 6. Removed are replaced the O ring on the assembly (shifter end) there is only 1 O ring on the assembly 7. Re assembled entire unit, filled with oil and restarted the engine to check the leak and it was fixed.... The new O ring made a better seal. I quess the old one maybe dried out some??? shrunk ??? don't really know. Cost of repair--- $ .65 new O ring $1.49 1 new quart tranny fluid. Very easy fix.... Less than 1 hour time. I hope this information helps somebody in the future. Dennis H. |

Dennis,
that o-ring is a good indicater as to the rest of the condition of the other o-rings including the ones that apply the clutch packs, its an 1982 and its almost time to go through the trans, keep an eye on the trans, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure |
