Is the key sliding forward and not letting the prop on all the way? Maybe the key is slightly larger then the keyway on the new prop and it needs to be sanded down slightly. Will the prop go all the way on without the key in?

When you spin the prop in the water, it will work its way up the tappered shaft and get stuck.

Are you trying to put a 1 1/8 prop on a 1" shaft?

I don't feel that letting the thrust of the prop tighten itself is a sound method of prop installation. The prop should fit the taper and the nut will snug it up. |

Tom, That's so basic I wouldn't have even thought of it! The 2000 would have the down angle reduction trans with a 1 1/8" shaft! |

The '90 most likely has the down angle 1.23 trans as well. Assuming thats the case, the 90 can use any prop the '00 196 can, as both use 1" shafts- only the V-drives use the 1-1/8". |

Well, once again I've been educated on the newer boats. Tim, Thanks for filling me in. Why do only the V drives have the 1 1/8" shaft? As a mechanical engineer, it was just logical for me to assume that the reduction trans's had the larger shaft. With the reduction, torque is multiplied by the ratio so it can swing a larger prop and this torque needs to be transmitted through the shaft. |

Maybe you can back the nut off all the way and let it start on a different set of threads. This might rotate it around enough to align for your cotter key.

JD, The only way he's going to find "a different set of threads" is on another boat! There is only a single thread on the shaft. Crazy, Why do you feel you need to tighten the nut a full turn? The nut is only to snug up the taper. The nut does not really hold the prop on. The taper does and this is why a puller is required to remove the prop. A good example of a tapered means of holding 2 pieces together is a drill bit chuck. The chuck on a electic drill or drill press is held on with the taper ONLY! |
