Is there anyway to tighten the rudder? Will this cause alot of harmonics also?
Thanks for the Help! |

Andy, Have you tried tightening the packing nut? How loose is it?

Swifty,
What year and model do you have? Is the rudder loose in the port? Or, is the port loose? Chuck |

It is a 76 Ski Tique. If you grab the rudder you can wigle it in backeards and forwards and side to side under the boat.

It sounds like the shaft is worn. I'm not sure about the Tique, but on my boat I simply remove the rear seat to gain access to the rudder. If you want to take it out to check it, loosen the nut on the control arm on top of the rudder. Have someone under the boat, or I have used a proped up milk crate to catch the rudder when it falls. Maybe if you take it out you can see if the shaft is worn, or the rudder port. If it is the port these guys sell them: Buck Algonquin

The rudder on my '77 Martinique was loose in the port as you describe and I experienced no ill effects such as harmonics/vibration.
I believe the force of the prop wash was enough to hold the rudder hard against the port in any given place. I suppose you could get some adverse effects if the steering was absolutely neutral, which mine was not as I do not like neutral steering. |

Swifty, I don't know the tolerances of the rudder shaft to the port but do know they aren't real close brand new. My 54,64 and 77 all have the side play. Tighten up the packing or replace it and run the boat to see what happens. Unlike the prop shaft packing, that is always rotating, the rudder packing can be clamped down quite tight.
