I attempted to start my mustang today and couldnt get it to fire - the motor seemed to be turing over a little too easily so I got out the compression tester and found that it has like 50 to 90 psi on all the cylinders.

Damn.

So I have options:

A) Rebuild the original 260 thats in the boat.

B) Find a decent running 289 or 302 from a car/truck, and convert it to reverse rotation re-using the appropriate parts from my 260 (the cam is the important part right?)

c) Spend all the money and buy a crate motor that is already set up for reverse rotation bolt on my interceptor parts

What do you guys think?

A. If mine and I was happy with the performance of the 260, I would rebuild it.

B. Trying to convert a standard rotation to right hand is more than the cam. I understand that the journals on the crank are machined differently and there are a few other "hidden" changes. Not something I would care to tackle without a whole bunch more knowledge. Not that I am afraid of a rebuild, more like I would hate to spend all those hours doing the work and then watching it meltdown because I overlooked some $0.50 detail like a right-handed oil pump bearing or something equally 'minor'.

C. Probably the most costly, but you do get a warranty of sorts???

Let us know how it goes.

How many hours does the engine have on it. I'd pull the heads before I decided. You may be able to get away with just a valve job.

My 2 cents is to re-build. You have a lot of options...go original...stroke...performance cams, intake etc without the hassle of accessories, mounts etc not working.

I agree with Rick, and add that you may want to leak test to see if it's rings or valves...most likely valves.

A 260 has a smaller bell housing bolt pattern than a 289 and 302. I found this out when I changed from a 260 to a 302.
