Hello all,
I have owned a 1985 SN 2001 for 10 years and am now in the market for a used mid 90's sport or super sport nautique. I am interested in a 1996 sport nautique which has throttle body injection. Is this the same thing as elec. fuel injection? If this boat has 300+ HP, does that automatically mean it has the GT-40 engine option? thanks. |

Throttle Body Injection is an early crude form of electronic fuel injection. It is basically a carb with electronic fuel management vs the fuel controlled directly into the cylinders as in newer EFI systems. TBI is still an efficent system and is more simplistic than the newer EFI systems.

Ok, here is the proper way to look at fuel injection. ALL fuel injection can be classified as Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI).
TBI is an EFI setup that utilizes Throttle Body Injection (looks like a carburetor). The TBI units have two injectors that meter the fuel for all the clyinders at once (again, similiar to a carburetor). The chief advantage over the carburetor is a more precise fuel metering capability and better cold start fuel control. All of which increase fuel economy and lowers emissions. MPI is an EFI setup that utilizes Multi-Port Injection (today's standard). In other words, there is a fuel injector located close to each intake valve within the intake manifold. The injectors squirt fuel directly at the intake valve and only when needed as triggered by the control module. Now, the mid nineties PCM Pro Ski EFI engines used a TBI setup that developed about 260 HP. I believe the 310 HP engine is indeed the GT-40, but not certain. |

The Dealer I purchased my 95 Sport from said the TBIs that came out in 94 had all kinds of issues, especially "sticking" which resulted in a super high idle. He said when they ordered the 95s they refused to get the TBIs (I think known as "Pro Injection" engines). So they ordered carbeurated engines with the GT 40 heads. So the "300+" hp on my engine comes from the heads. It's almost a GT 40. Heck if I know the difference though!
