I am redoing my Grandpa's boat (23 ft. '78 Correct Craft Fish Nautique) he has recently handed me from the inside out. I slave day after day, but what a labor of love. I need a new (or at least think I do) transmission oil water cooler. I recently painted the engine and took off all the hoses. When I took off the transmission oil water cooler (I think thats the name), I disconnected the hydro lines and the infamous pepto bismol strawberry milkshake came out. I took off the mounting bracket and noticed a little corrosion. The engine had been sitting out all summer, covered with plastic, but could have been rained on. Could this have caused water to enter the transmission or only if the lines were disconnected (which they were not). Does anyone know where I can find a 5/8 X 5 inch transmission oil water cooler for a 78' chevy 350 OMC? (I have a part number if needed) Or do I just need to check the current one to see if it is good? If I block one line how do I pressurize the other to see if it has a leak? Where do I find other new or used engine parts if needed for this engine? Thanks in advance for the help.

Duane, The oil side of the cooler is the easiest to pressurize to check for leaks. You will need to get a taper plug for the SAE fitting on one side and a adapter to pipe thread on the other. You can then get some regulated air (about 20 PSI) into it and stick it in a bucket of water is see if you get any bubbles out. Some of the OMC's had fairly substantial coolers with cast bronze ends on them. Does yours? If so, it may be a problem finding. A good radiator shop may be able to open it up and repair the tube bundle inside. If it is a light duty copper cooler like they use on later marine trans's, then new ones are available from Skidim. They are one of our sponsors are have a link here on site.

Engine parts should be available through any auto parts store. There are some that are reverse rotation marine so tell us what you are doing.

Welcome to our site and keep us posted on your progress. Download some pictures as we all would love to see the boat. Keep us in mine with helping you on any other problems you encounter

8122pbrainard, Thanks for the reply. I will check it out, hopefully it's still good and the water that is iin the transmission is from something else (like sitting ouside the boat) and can be flushed out. I plan on flushing the engine until it is clear trans fluid before reinstalling the engine and taking it for a test ride. I definitley will keep this site in mind for further help and post photos under SemperFIsh in the boat maintenance forum. Thanks again.

I am now replacing the hoses on the engine. It is a 78' Chevy 350 OMC. Does anyone know where the best place to get old engine hoses? Is there a one stop shop, maybe a web-site that has them all, or am I doomed to find them one by one, and use hoses that don't exactly fit. I saw some that could work if I cut them to length and bend them a little. I would ideally like the hoses to fit just the way the originals did. I was told to check old parts suppliers like NAPA in Lakeland FL, I will continue in my quest, but if anyone else has had this problem or has an answer, please share.

Capt.

As a fellow owner of the slightly scarcer chevy/OMC, I have found this site to be useful. You might find what you need here.

Semper, a word to the wise on the trans, water and borg warners dont mix and it is close to impossible to get all of the water out without dis-assembling, if its been in there for a while it separates from the oil and rusts things up and the rust flakes and gets into areas that it doesnt belong in, it also sludges and gets into the reverse piston cavity. you could flush it ten times and water will magically re-appear

Eric, I'm getting a new tranny cooler to be on the safe side. What's the chances of a new one leaking from the factory? I'd hate to install that Dearbo and see it fill up with water.

Eric,
Thanks for the post to my problem. So, if I flush it ten times, is that usually sufficient, or do I need to run it a little and continue to flush it. I know that the fluid will probably come out clear after the ten flushes, but as you say, will magically be contaminated by the water I didn't get out the ten times. My thoughts were to flush it until it seems clear, then run it a little to get that water to mix in, flush it again, and repeat the process. I have never messed with a transmission flush, but I have someone that knows how. Do you think I will eventually get all the contamination out? Is there a better way (without disassembly) or should I take it to a professional mechanic? I don't want to take a chance in ruining my tranny, but also don't want to pay someone a fortune to do what I can do myself if that's all that can be done.
