We are considering a vacation to Maine instead of the beach this year. I really know nothing about Maine other than I would like to check it out. Looking for water related must sees, etc. Any of you Northerners or anyone else that can give me some great places to visit, I would appreciate it.

In Maine you can have the beach along the southern coastal area, quaint little fishing and tourist towns in the Downeast area, and beautiful lakes inland. Are you bringing a boat?

We won't be bringing the boat on this trip. We want to check out some of the quaint fishing towns, etc. & great scenery in the area. My daughter has found Barharbor, Calais, & Eastport. Any one better than the other?

Beautiful county. I went to school in Brunswick, right on the coast (life was tough back then) You can bed and breakfast your way up the coast. This was one of my favorites that I stayed at with my wife shorty after we were married when I took her to this part of the world for the first time.

driftwood

Lots of what you want to see. Beaches, fishing/lobstering villages, light houses (dont miss Pemmiquid)

Riley, Mike and the others from up there can certainly give you more insights than I. And you wont need your boat, lots of folks to catch rides with up in that area. And if you decide you want to squeeze Cape Cod into your journey, I'll give you a pull too.

I've never been to these places but, Bar Harbor is a major destination with Arcadia National Park. People come to Maine just to go there. It takes a couple of days to take the place in. Calais and Eastport maybe worth seeing if your in the area, but I don't think I'd make them the point of your trip. Nice towns to see on the way to Bar Harbor if you drive up Route 1 is Camden and Rock Port. Also Boothbay Harbor. Route 1 is a nice ride, but has a ton of traffic in summer. I'm a lake person, so I have limited experience recreating along the coast.

Sebago Lake/Lakes Region is a nice area if you go inland. That's where I go.

What part of the sumer are you planning?

   Skicat,
Maine is a great place to visit, boat or no boat. The places you mentioned are nice as well as Camden/Rockport,Boothbay Harbor,Acadia National Park, the Moosehead Lake region and the Sebago Lake area. Can't loose at any of those places.

Forgot to mention,my buddy's parents own a bed & breakfast in Kittery if you're in that area.World famous Outlet shopping for the girls and we could grab a few beers. There are also beaches nearby and Kittery and York are both historic fishing towns(not as much charm as the downeast places, though)It's only ten minutes from my house.I can get the info if you'd like.

We traveled the Maine coast for a week several years ago and it will bring you back in time.

A few towns to stay away from would be Orono, Haven, Ludlow, Castle Rock, Jerusalem's Lot and Derry. Some really weird stuff has happened around there. Can you tell I've read too many Steven king books

Thanks guys for the info. My daughter & wife are checking out things on the internet & will definately look at the areas mentioned. Not sure of the dates yet, but when things are finalized I will let you know. It would be great to hook up for a beer or 2.

The only one of those towns I ever heard of is Orono, and no doubt some strange stuff has happened up there.

Aren't all the people in NH with teeth MASS transplants?

Greg, keep asking questions and we'll help you out, but you definately want to have a plan before you come here. The coastal area draws a lot of people in the summer.

There is some great hiking in the New England area as well. NH's White Mountains are spectacular. I'm not as familliar with the ME peaks, but sure they are great too.

I've only really been to Acadia, ME. We make an annual trek there in the fall over Columbus Day weekend. It is an amazing place with lots of things to do. The hikes are great and have beautiful ocean views. There is biking, beaches and Bar Harbor for shopping/ restaraunts, etc.

There is a good reason they call Maine Vacationland.

   ROFLMAO!!

Bruce,I did not see that article, but will look for it.
Greg, these guys are all right, plenty of great things to do.I am in the town between Kittery and Ogunquit(I am in York, nice beach here, too) so I can help with that area if you decide to stop there.Just remember to stay out of the piano bars in Ogunquit . Like Bruce mentioned, you definately want a plan, because you most likely will not find a room in any of these towns at the last minute, and the traffic will be brutal on the coast, but it's worth it.

The old joke about Ogunquit is if you drop your wallet, kick it to Wells before bending over to pick it up.

That's because the others are fictional from Steven Kings twisted mind. I enjoy reading his novels because most are placed in Maine and being a New Englander I pick up so many nuances that an Outsider may not.

PS. My comment about going back in time was a compliment to the area. Block out what the tourist trade has probably done to the area and enjoy the natural scenery and history of the area. If you get a chance take a ferry ride or whale watching tour and look at that coast from the water, it's breathtaking.

skicat; You are 100% correct about your traffic. I hate going thru there twice a year...on the way to and from Tennessee. If you can't make it to Reid's this year for our visit maybe me and Patti could stop on our way thru back to Florida. Be cool to see you again and maybe meet up with Greg (BFN).

Hey Greg,

Kennebunkport is a popular tourist destination. My family has lived in Kennebunkport for 40 years now. My grandparents have both passed away, but my aunt still lives there.

- The port is great for shopping and site seeing. Plan on parking and walking, it is a lot easier than trying to move the car around the port.
- The port is very picturesque so bring your camera.
- If you like beer check out the Kennebunkport Brewery.
- Take the trolley tour. (This is a bus that looks like a trolley car.) It is pretty reasonably priced and it will take you around town. Youll learn a few historical things about the town and get to see the sites. (This is good after youve walked the port for a while and want to give your feet a rest.)
- If it interests you, you can take a scenic boat tour and/or a whale watch out of the port.
- After shopping in the port you could take your car down Ocean Avenue. Ocean Ave. runs parallel to the port, out to the coast. (This is also the road youd take to get to the Bushs place.) Just after the port, before Ocean Ave. bears to the left and continues along the coast, there is a large white hotel on your left - The Colony Hotel, I believe. Watch for the entrance to a parking area on the right. You can park there and walk out on a jetty and watch some of the boats going in and out of the port.

Those are some ideas Im sure you can get some others from the towns website.

Kennebunkport, Me

If youre into trains and trolleys, or have little ones who are, you can check out the Seashore Trolley Museum, also located in Kennebunkport.

Trolley Museum

Here is a shot I took from the jetty last year...

Hope the info helps... Have a safe trip.

Skicat, just my opinion, and I love the beach except for laying out on it, but a trip to the coast of Maine trumps just about anything the Carolina-Ga coasts can manage. Laurie and I honeymooned there back in the 40's, (seems that long ago, actually '92) and it was fantastic. Boats, boats, boats, lobster, fish and more boats. And clean. And people so nice that it's obvious they moved there from the South, more than likely for the boats. We stayed in a different waterfront town every other day including Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor, Southwest Harbor,Rockport and Boothbay Harbor. And did I mention I saw a lot of boats.

Hey Mike,

I have been meaning to post the agenda, just never got to it. We are flying into Portland on July 30 & driving down to Kennebunkport for 2 nights. Driving up the coast to Booth Bay Harbor 2 nights, then up to Bar Harbor for 3 nights & drive back to Portland to fly back to Atlanta. Sound like a typical tourist trip? I don't think that gets us down into your area, but if anybody is close to these places & would like to meet up, let me know.

Any must do's in these areas?

All kinds of stuff to do.Acadia National Park, there's a small railway museum in Boothbay you could kill an hour or two at.They also have a big building that usually has a lot of antique cars and stuff on loan, but sometimes it isn't open.Kennebunkport.....let's see....you could cruise by Walker Point and wave to Pres.Bush if he's in town, but your time may be better spent tossing a brew back at Federal Jacks or if you like motorcycles you could hit Bentley's Saloon in Arundel(not a place for kids!) usually 2-300 bikes on a hot summer night.Your only about 1\2 hour from where I live when in K-Bunkport.Shoot me an Email a week or so ahead and we could meet up if our schedules work out .I most likely will be in Boothbay Harbor during the 3rd weekend in July,Looks like I'll just miss you up there.
