Hey guys I'm looking for some advice from some one with experience with boats like mine.
On my 79 Tique draining the trans was pretty easy. I traded to a 94 Nautique this winter and there is no space around the trans. Looks to be a pain in the ass to drain. So I'm thinking I'm going to suck the fluid out. Is there any disadvantage in doing this? Also any good advice on the way top do it? Thanks, Gabe ------------- Work to live, not live to work. |

Tique, get the trans to op temp, then fill completely to the top with fresh oil, fire the boat again and let the old oil circulate with the new. remove the line that goes to the cooler and put in a bucket and fire the boat again and wait for the oil to stop coming out. then re-install the line ------------- "the things you own will start to own you" |

key word: bucket, make sure you hit it, actually the oil doesnt come flying out its a pretty good stream but not what you would think.
I can only make a suggestion like your mom when you were a kid, make sure you dont miss the toilet, i find myself telling my son that come to think of it ------------- "the things you own will start to own you" |

So are you saying that sucking it out is not a good thing, or just not as thorough as using the cooler line. Good stuff eric, I've never heard that aproach. Sounds a little like the old farmers used to say about putting on a new oil filter and running it with the old oil for a while then change both. ------------- 86 2001 |

sucking it out is also a good idea, once again i went to a job 2 hours away and left my pump at the shop, so i figured you know what? im going to remove the hose and fire the boat and have been doing it ever since, I still use my pump but on some of the bigger boats they will have 10 gallons of oil in them and using the transmissionn pump is the way to go ------------- "the things you own will start to own you" |

I'm going to give it a try. Eric do you have a trans fluid you recommend?

Hey guys!
I have a velvet drive trans in my 77 ski nautique and it seems to want to stay in gear even in neutral... It spins a few revolutions a second... as if in gear. Is this a trans fluid issue also, or something else? Any disadvantage to sucking out the fluid and replacing with NEW fluids? Thanks! Jamie |

Jamie, This is what Eric recommended to me and he is probably the most knowledgeable person on the transmission stuff on this site. I think it's OK to suck it out as well, but you should warm the trans up first and do the over fill thing Eric mentioned above. ------------- Work to live, not live to work. |

I've heard it common for these transmissions to turn the prop a bit in neutral, but I'm not sure if means something is out of adjustment.

I look at it this way, if you happen to leave the boat running and your kids foot is under there will the turning prop cut his foot off or will it stop?

they will drag a bit when cold, or when you rev the engine, but in reality you should have a nice clean nuetral...it is also unsafe if you cant get it to stop turning and there is no adjustment as i said a second ago ------------- "the things you own will start to own you" |
