I have a 79 Barefoot 454, my tansmission needs to be rebuilt, I am wondering if anyone knows any options other than taking it to the local boat shop and getting charged an arm and a leg. Eric, how much do you charge to do this and what do shipping costs usually run. I believe it is a 10-18-001. Thats what I could read on the tag since its been painted over by a previous owner.

what problems are you having with the trans? for every 10-18 there are probably 100 10-17's, alot depends on hard part damage too...so its important to know why you are thinking that the trans needs to be rebuilt

When in neutral the prop keeps turning and the boat keeps moving forward, also it will slip under hard acceleration.

I'm sorry to say, that sounds very familiar. Mine was acting just like that right before it went to the gear spa(Eric's place). As it neared its end, it wanted a few extra rpm's to drop into forward, and it plain dumped the day I decided to pull it...thankfully, almost on the trailer.

sounds like age got the best of it, sounds like you need a normal rebuild and possibly a pump, and probably input shaft if grooved, really hard to say until you look inside
lets say it wont be under 750.00 and wont go over 900.00 with hard parts,
its a BB trans and is a touch different than the 10-17
the 10-18's seem to get more abuse and wear in them

eric...I saw that Cat powerd boat you were talking about that is parked at Ringhaver in orlando, that thing looks cool and fast, but it looks like it has not run in a while, how fast did you say it went?

they purchased it is a test boat for long sustained runs with diesel power, we busted 100 mph in it once and the conditions were perfect. but it could hold 98 mph all day long and has many APBA records to back it. if you get a chance snap a picture of it.
How close are you to Ringhaver...i might be taking a trip down there soon
