I'll skip all the customary "sorry for the stupid question blah, blah, blah", but my knowledge of engines is very limited. This black soot that accumulates on the inside of the doghouse at the front after about a month's use is an indication of what problem?

That looks like belt dust to me. I had the same problem and my issue was pitted pulleys. It could also be from misalignment of the pulleys.

You may need to clean that dust out of your flame arrestor before too much gets in the engine.

If your brackets are straight, then you may only need some pulley shims. Moroso makes an inexpensive pack of different thickness shims. If the brackets aren't square, then it might get complicated. I think the crank pulley is where to start and make the rest line to it. My guess is shims behind the crank pulley would not be good.

With the belts off, you might lay a straight edge in the center of 2 pulleys to see it better.

Adam, Go at it with a straight edge to see if any of the sheaves are out. Place the straight edge on both outer edges of one sheave and then the other end of the straight edge to another sheave. A prime candidate would be the alternator if someone put a mismatch on it. Brackets may need to be modified.

It also may be just time to put a new set on and run them with the proper tension.

Wow...is that what it looks like under there?

My recomendation is take it to MM's brother (you met him at the river) and let him fix 'er up. That is where the '80 is going on Monday. Keith will have her all ready for Tennessee.

Hi-ya Luciano....hows the resturant business going? Maite (sp?) doing good?

I have to have Keith look at my carb. Leaks...so it is probably time for a rebuild. He is also gonna do me new cables for the transmission and throttle. My Morse control is gonna go into Woody at SECC for a rebuild. All this so I can be in good shape for Tennessee.
