Well Eric, depends on what you would be president of...
If it's the president of your local quilt club... You'd probably want another piece to sow on...

i thought it would be a good topic, since we are in an election year, and were down to 2 choices, do we want "change" or do we want the same old routine? im standing in a corner shaking on this one

I really can sense what is going to happen, a contender as a running mate, then pushed into the top spot

What are you saying Eric, that if Hillary is VP, Barrack will end up like Vince Foster, and she will become prez?

-------------

Posted By: Kristof
Date Posted: June-05-2008 at 10:27am
That's what's going through my mind as well...
Hillary stated that she would be "proud to serve as VP" under Obama. After the contest those two had over the last few months, it's kinda hard for me to think she really means that...

As a European, I really don't know at this time who is the best choice for you guys as a president... From time to time I take a look on the websites of the candidates and I'm still in doubt as to whom would go my vote if I were an American. (Bothers me tho, that Obama's home page is immediatly asking you for a donation... Not even elected yet and already going in your pockets )

One thing I can say (and I'm speaking for myself) and that is that I for one am glad the Bush era is over... Because to me he brought fear (and anger) in the hearts of people (not only in the US, but all over the world. For this, we all had to give up some freedom and privacy... But that's just my opinion.

McCain has a head start tho. During the competition between the two democrats, he has had the time to do his campain in all serenity..

Maybe start a poll here...?

A lot of kids here don't even know the name of our prime minister... So don't worry about it... That happens everywhere

Politics do interest me, and especially when it comes to world politics, because let's face it: the world is one big village nowadays. So what affects you guys, will rapidly have it's consequences on us... and vice versa.

Kristof, interesting thoughts, my opinion on Bush is he was dealt a very difficult hand, Sept 11 shortly after taking office and cleaning up from the Clinton era, perhaps not all the best choices but I for one am thankful these things did not occur during the Clinton Admin. That's what's buggin' me! Intelligence nowadays can frickin' know wich book you're reading when you're sitting on the toilet, but they can't find Osama...??!!??

CIA wants his ass... Mossad wants his ass... MI6 wants his ass...
These are the three best intelligence agencies in the world, equipped with technology that us regular Joes only see in science fiction movies... Still they can't find and apprehend him... MY ASS (I'll bet they'll come after my ass after reading this post... )

CQ, I'll probably get bashed on this one, but I'm still not convinced about the "official" version of 9/11. I'm still trying to read as much as I can about it to know more (both sides of the story)... But IMHO too many things just don't add up in my book... But then again, what do I know...

Im right there with you Kris, how the hell can you organize a 9/11, hit a building in the right spot with a full tank of fuel, they knew those buildings would come down, or somebody knew and it had to be a structural enginneer that knows those buildings. I still think it was a ploy to drag us into the middle east, like it or not. we new he was responsible for 93 and Clinton had him in the cross hairs and someone more powerful than him told him not to pull the trigger as what is happening now...in my book he is an untouchable

You guys are crazy. Bin Laden can't be caught because his followers are fanatics, true believers and can't be bought. He's holed up in his primitive world which is untouchable to people on the outside.

9/11 was brilliant on their part in that it was able to be carried out, but no one knew those buildings would come down. That was a bonus for them. Crashing big planes into them was enough to destroy them even if they didn't come down.

they barely have telegraph over there and dont you think television is pretty much censored, the Pres blurts out there is a 25 million dollar reward on his head and who hears it? those people think different than you and I, they will blow themselves up for 72 virgins.
there is no way that i am going to believe that this country does'nt know exactly where he is, it is impossible not too, there is some type of Alliance as to why he is untouched. its just to hard to believe the other way. there is no way some idiot is going to wake up in the morning and say "I hate America so im going to run 2 planes into the towers" there was another reason besides hate, as we used WMD as an excuse to congress to pull us into Iraq, why are we there....because we care, yeah right

Sometimes things are just the way they appear on the surface. Simply listen to how damn convoluted the 'evidence' is as put forth by any conspiracy crowd.

My simple stance is not born from ignorance, just acceptance of what is out of my control.

I love to argue with you guy's, think out of the box once in a while, was it a plot to pull us in? i dont know, was it a plot not to? you dont know. I dont pull information from talking heads at 6 and 11. just last week a guy from Belgium asked why my parking lot was empty from a satelite view...if i would of said this 5 or so years ago, you guy's would say i was as crazy as charlie manson. the point is these wars that we tangle in are not about humanity, we didnt have to send troops into a dictator led country, we put a laser on the building where his boys were hiding out from a control room and that was the end of that, no troops involved. with Osama these guys have to communicate wherever they are hiding either by cell phone or by a satelite phone, seeing that afghanistan isnt in the information age its not that hard to locate a signal, he is sick and needs dialysis which needs power and chances are it is powered by a generator or batteries, the generater will make heat signatures easily picked out by satelite, or mule packs with batteries also picked off by satelite, point is they know exactly where he is and I would say our government is waiting for him to die naturally to continue good relations with SA
sometimes things are the way they appear but again sometimes they are not

BTW, i am for the fair tax

& how the hell should I know why we went to vietnam? 22 years old & it's surprisingly not a topic that gets covered in most schools...

The fact of the matter is that trying to come up with all these conspiracy theories is ridiculous, as steve said above, sometimes things are just as they appear on the surface. Now i'm not saying that there weren't already plans to go into Iraq at somepoint in bush's presidency, but to call the attacks a plot to drag us in is ludicrous...are you insueing that bush was pulling for something of that nature to happen so he had a reason to go there? If so, you're way off your rocker, because i don't believe that any one man would wish that upon anyone just so he could have a reason for one of his plans...

...I can't believe there's grown men who believe this conspiracy theory BS, I thought it was just kids my age who didn't know any better & college professors trying to brainwash their students with their hippy-liberal bull***************.

Nate, i go to the va hospital once or twice a week because we have an account with them, why is it that thier version is always different from Diane Sawyers? a close friend of mine is currently visiting because of Agent orange, 2 months ago he noticed his hands shaking and he just stopped in here less than i hour ago, not making any fun but after he left one of the guy's said he is shaking to the point where i thought he was dancing. its still in his blood, and they diagnosed him with Parkinsons, everybody knows its agent orange or is it, that must be a conspiracy too.
I talk to these guy's all the time from Vietnam on up untill today. I take the time to listen to them and become friends with many of them and you know what....I dont think they are bull ***************ting me the way Diane Sawyer is bull***************ting you

it means that things are not always what they seem, I refuse to watch the news, people hear what they want to hear even though it may not be true. If you have people that think as Osama thinks dont you think we may have some of the same personalities in Higher government? Generals are chompin at the bit to go to war cause thats thier job, and in know way can one man make decisions as President Bush does, he may be talked into things that he doesnt want to do by top aids and even people above him that really push the worlds buttons, whether you like it or not he has to answer to someone too.
the point is being young as you are keep an open mind and dont always believe what you read because it is a form of propaganda. these vets have no reason to lie to me and can look me straight in the face and tell me whats going on and i tend to believe them after all they are the witnesses of it and they not getting information from the nightly news

Eric,
I'm with you on these issues. I always try to read and try to listen to both sides of the story... I never accept what is told on the news without giving it a second thought.

Nate... think about this: since US is in the Iraq war, defense budget went up to the roof and warfare business is booming again (not only in the US, but also here at FN munitions, GIAT in France etc)... Two things are always the main factor in wars: money and power. That has always been and will always be.

Who gets the money: defence contrators
Who gets power in the middle east: US and NATO

Oh, and another thing to think about: read up on what Israël is allowed to do in the middle east, with the consent of the west...
Remember they bombed Lebanon for some ridiculous reason last year...? Who funded the rebuilding of Lebanon before the Israëli's bombed it to the ground? The west did... And I don't see us invading Israel now, do I...?

Nothing is what it appears to be... Not on that level...

But, that just my two cents...

outside looking in, you can usually see more.
your check book at home is a business, the place you work is a business and the people we pay our taxes too is a business and thats how i think the government is run, at home you eat the beef that will out date first or it goes bad and you have to throw it out....same exact principle

Here's a couple of new friends who are also vietnam vets. That's 26 on the left. 26 is Jamaican slang for white boy, and The General is on the right. These guys have made an art of beach bumming!

My father, who was in WWII, would disagree with you. The number one reason would be defense of our allies, our nation and our way of life.

By the way, happy "D Day" to all. Lets not forget those who died to keep us free.

Kurt,
agreed! And also thankful towards your father! As I mentionned on other threads I went to quite a few museums about WWII.
Buffalo,
I also visited the whole coast of Normandy. Beleive me... They still love the Americans for landing there on D-Day and they honor them in many ways! As do I... Because my late grandfather was in the resistance (Dad still has food stamps and medals from him kept in a cigar case from that period). Oh, Buffalo, here in Belgium, thay also honor our American friends... take a tour in the Ardennes... "Battle of the Bulge" ring a bell?

But... WWII also started on a power issue... Hitler wanted to rule all of Europe... He wanted power over a new empire: The Third Reich as he called it...

My city has been a refugee resettlement city for the past 30 years or more. We had so many Muhammed Muhammeds that were born on January 1 come into the schools during the past 10 years that the system had a meltdown and had to be updated.

It's kind of funny, some of these kids at my son's middle school track meets look like they should be competing in college.

eric; You a browns fan? I was and a season ticket holder. Sat at about the 45...lower deck ...behind the browns bench. Had the 2 seats right behind my brother. Thru the Sipe and Kosar era. Now that was fun. Had to give up on them. No interest at all since they came back.

Can't argue with the Steeler's Super Bowls.

To me, the islam is now where catholicism was a few hundred years ago.
Similar thing is happening in the islam as there was with the catholics back then, where the church killed and burned everyone in the name of God who wasn't a follower of the only true faith.

Fanatic muslims are doing the same thing with the "infidels"... which is another word for heretics, used by the catholics in the middle ages.

Today, in our parts, church and state are separated, which wasn't the case back then. In the islamic world, politics and religion are not separated yet...

Well then... Not as a president, since Belgium has a prime minister, but some of the things I would do as prime minister in my country:

- cut taxes on fuel (apply the "click"-sytem)
- implement net index on wages
- cut down super salaries of top managers over here
- apply max prices on energy
- stop the stupid arguements between north and south of this country and start working on the real problems people over here have
- aplying measures to have some control over prices and economy, without going towards a communist model of regulated economy

An example: Electrabel, an energy company made billions of profits last year. Good for the shareholders, but at the expence of the clients. Energyprices here are about the highest in the world. To me, it's a good thing Electrabel makes profit, but not such enormous profits by keeping prices too high compared to our neighbouring countries... Same thing applies for the phone compagnies and internet providers.

Also, the distribution sector is very expensive here... prices are kept high due to agreements made between supermarket chains... So food prices are also high...

A few ideas out of the collection...

Kristof, you're really scaring me now. Let the free market decide...most shareholders are also clients, right? I bet Electrabel didn't make near the profits of the cosmetic companies?!!?

-aplying measures to have some control over prices and economy, without going towards a communist model of regulated economy

I don't see the above statement as possible. As soon as we start giving up freedoms and freedom of choice, what's to stop the gov't from regulating how many times we can break wind per day?!!?

allright Azues, one of the many things I would do, find a way to legalize and regulate drugs, Prisons are filled to capacity with drug offenders and it totals more than 60 billion a year to operate them. tax as we do alcohol, i would think if they were legal and affordable and regulated, harsh crimes would definitely lesson,
it is an issue and i dont condone the use of drugs but it would definitely help the economy

the next thing I would do is audit every congressman, every senator, every single politician, with the geekiest IRS team of agents available and see where every last nickle came from and see how they funded thier house in the Bahama's, then with the emptied prisons from legalizing drugs i would fill them back up lol   Eric

I agree with you Eric. We should stop throwing people in jail for smoking, selling and growing, pot. There are a lot of violent crimes committed by people drinking alcohol and I have yet to read a news story about someone committing a violent act after smoking a little weed. As for other drugs, they need to stop protecting stupid people from themselves. Take the Methamphetamine epidemic. I have to go to the pharmacist and sign a paper with my address etc. just to buy a box of Sudafed for my runny nose, because some losers out there are buying the stuff up in large quatities to make meth!   What a bunch of crap! I say we give give these meth-heads all the meth they want and let them kill themselves off, at least they won't be robbing and killing to get te stuff. I like to think of it as "Social Darwinism" Same thing should apply to laws for seat belts, helmets etc.   Stop protecting stupid people from themselves, lets clean up the gene pool!

But, like Buffalo said, they would never let you shoot that cash cow.

As for being president, there is no way I would want that job. I wouldn't want to be under a microscope for the rest of my life.

I do agree with that, Eric. The system is dirty and has grown away from what it was designed to do, represent the people. I don't care who they are or what they claim to do, they do it for themselves and what will help them the most. That goes for all politicians, republicans and dems.

I, for one, am not really happy with either of our choices coming up in this election, but like someone said before, you have to choose the lesser of two evils. If you choose to do nothing, i.e. not vote, you have no room to bitch when stuff does not go your way.

The drug thing Eric was talking about is exactly what i would say as well. Make pot legal, allow (probably tobacco) companies to market & sell it & just tax the hell out of it. The revenue made from that I'm sure would offset what they're making from all the busts now. And if someone's found on the street with large amounts of "black market" dope they should be punished. All this coming from someone who doesn't smoke, since people normally think i smoke copius amounts of pot when i say that.

Also, I completely agree with Randy, I absolutely hate the seatbelt law. Yeah, I put mine on every time i get in the car, but if i forget one time & happen to drive by a cop he can give me a ticket for that? seriously? what a load of BS! Laws are made to protect people, the seatbelt law isn't protecting anyone but the people who choose not to buckle up...noone else is going to die from getting into an accident with another car who's driver isn't wearing a seatbelt (unless the other person flies through the windshield & takes em out..haha)

Buffalo, I totally agree with Kristoff, perhaps not where you live but in other places of the world free market is destroying quality of the services, prices go up and services get much worse, the only ones winning are companies or shareholders.
There has to be an state that protects their citizens from these companies. Letting them profit but assuring customers/citizens a certain quality between services and price.

It's like the anti-monopolitation law applied to microsoft.

There must be some form of regulation possible. Cosmeticts are luxury products, so no problems with the profits there. But electricity and heating are not luxury but necessity... Many people here have problems paying their energy bill because the free market lets the prices go sky high...
