Wisconsin got pounded with hardcore rain this weekend. Lake Delton, in Wisconsin Dells WI, is now gone. Completely drained.
Due to the high water levels, a 100 yard wide breach of the dam completely drained the lake. It is now a mud flat. Boats are all sitting on dirt now.
Tommy Bartlets' ski show is based on this lake. They are closed for the foreseeable future.
Wow.

I'd like to see some photos but so far I haven't found any on the net.
From the weather update I review, it looks like it rained 5.5" in Green Lake yesterday. Any damage there?

We are experiencing the same thing in Indiana. A private lake just south of out lake had a breech in their dam as well. (There was a tornado during a totally different storm about a half a mile away from the dam earlier in the week) From Friday night to Sat. at noon we had 10 inches of rain. All lakes are closed due to the high water. Our dock is permanent and was under about 16 inches of water. This is the worst flood in history in our area, many homes are total losses.

BK, Looks like the video with the 2 houses falling into the water they've been playing on the news today is the lake.

I've seen several videos of the house collapses. Haven't seen a video or photo of what the lake itself looks like. Thanks. BKH

It's not so much that the lake is dry, we've probably all seen a dry lake before. But to think that a lake of that size was drained in 4 hours is mind-boggling. BKH

Wow. I haven't seen those photos until now.
You wonder if the lake will ever be the same and if so, how long will it take.
Green Lake seems OK. Mom said that there was a twister in the area but no major damage.
Looking at the bright side, at least they can clear out some of the submerged stumps.

Absolutely NO!! The DNR has probably had officers out there since the top of the first stump was exposed!! It's natural fish habitat. I believe it was 2 or 3 years ago that a new condo developement up in Eagle River "cleaned" up the shallow waters in front of a section of their land. They were fined by the DNR and by court order had to restore the shoreline/shallow water. They ended up having to go back to the brush pile/dump and find tree stumps and then anchor them to the bottom of the lake. They used those big screw in earth anchors that the utility companies use to anchor the end utility pole!

That was a little attempt at levity.
My response to the DNR would be "WHAT G-DAMN FISH?!!!"

(another feeble attempt at levity )

Steve, I have a related lake bottom example of the DNR Nazi's on the Three Lakes chain. A year ago last spring with our lower than normal water levels combined with the normal winter draw down lots of shoreline was exposed. The local Vilas county - Three Lakes news ran articles for several weeks telling people to resist the urge to go out and "clean" up the lake bottom. They stated that the DNR was out in force and even were taking photos as evidence of before proof just in case they needed to site people!!
BTW, the chain was down only about 9" last summer but now way above. I didn't get a chance to go look at the dam but heard from one of the local people that this spring the Dam has been wide open! Something he hadn't seen in 25 or 30 years!!

That's certainly a once in a lifetime event and no one could ever imagine it could happen but with that much rain coming you think they would have the foresight to open the damn and relieve some pressure. Mother nature is a bitch but someone's responsible for managing these things. Heads will roll.

OMG,
They said last night that Wisc will lose hundreds of millions in tourist dollars due to this devistation in the Dells. I'm sure once they fix the sea walls, they'll pump water back in from the river, but I'm sure that won't be this year...
Tommy Barlett's down
Scenic Boats down
Duck ride down
Fishing, skiing gone
This was all the DNR's doing... The upper lake damn wasn't open earlier enough or coordinated to let the pressure through Delton fast enough, before it was to late...
I'm sick and tired of these guys.. The same exact thing happened earlier this Spring down at my folk home on lake Schaffer Indiana.. Dozens of lake side homes were lost because of poor decision making to open the dams...

Do these low lake levels have anything to do with the lack of funds from the government to the C.O.E? just curious or are these all just natural problems?

Yup,Unbelievable
That road that let go is nothing more than an earthen damn, once the water tops it you've got New Orleans all over again. Is no one paying attention, we're supposed to learn from our mistakes. With all the ways we have of monitoring the weather these days this should have never happened.

Wow, that is both amazing and tragic. I wonder if the dam was open all the way if it would have made a difference, that is a lot of rain in a short amount of time. just goes to show you, you can try to control mother nature, but in the end she will always win.

While listening to local talk radio this afternoon I heard Tommy Barlett's was running shows today less the ski portion. I wonder how long that will last.

Well, they might still be able to do a skim boarding show...
Or how about monster truck mudding contests?
I heard they will be bringing back the sound effects guy. He was hilarious - when I was 10.

My brother is nearby on Lake Redstone, so far the dam has held but it's pretty ugly. He and his neighbor pulled their boats on Sunday AM as the water was rising, he also took all the planking off his dock, in the process he said boats, jet ski's and whatnot were floating past.
His shoreline/dock entry is at the red party island tube, dock is well below the surface:
Notice the Shorestation wheel in front of the green canopy, that is his!
His neighbor/buddy also pulled his Prostar which was on the lift under the canopy.
House low on the lake

That stinks! How did Vilas county fair during all this weather? We are towing the Nautique from Atlanta this Monday to Manitowish Waters, WI for two weeks of needed vacation.

It's fine, The heavy rains really only were in the southern half of Wisconsin. Water levels up north are at or slightly above the norm.
