Anybody here know how busy White Lake NC is on a typical summer Sunday afternoon? I've heard it is a zoo on Saturdays.
Thanks.

It is busy every day. About 12 boats, and that thing is rockin'. You can cruise around by the wake poles at 20, and circle the whole lake in 9 minutes. You'll see a correct craft hanging in every boat house. Lake Waccamaw is bigger, 9,000 acres of water. And it hasn't been crowded at all with the gas prices.

Thanks Tim!
I've been on White Lake before (the last time almost 30 yrs ago-time flies) but have never been on Waccamaw. I've been by it and was looking online at some pics, to me it has always looked like a very shallow lake.
Do you go to Waccamaw?

Lake Waccamaw is 11 miles from my house, and White Lake is about 22 miles. I go to Waccamaw almost every day, if the wind is calm. It has some shallow areas, mostly along the wake poles on the northern and southern sides. I rarely go to the northern side because there's several patches of lily pads and they have been digging up a whale skeleton on that side. The water has that brownish look from tanic acid from leaves etc from the creek that flows from a swamp. But that is only bad during heavy rain. It's fed by some underground springs too. White Lake is a lot clearer, spring feed, no swamp water and no gators, and the bottom sand is more white. There are gators at Waccamaw, but rarely do you see one in the lake, they mostly stay in the canals. I went to White Lake one time last summer, it was rough, not from the wind, just so many boats. That's where I learned to ski, behind my uncle's Mustang years ago. I noticed on Saturday at Waccamaw, there are more people just putting their boat in, a riding to the "back side" (where there are no houses) and just standing in the water drinking, swimming etc. Then head straight back to the boat ramp. There was only about 7 or 8 boats actually pulling skiers. You can go to www.whitelake.com and see a live cam of the pier at the boat ramp, it's on the right side of the page. Kenny, where do you live?

Tim-Yea, I was watching the web cam Friday and the lake was hopping.
Thanks for all of the info on Waccamaw!! I may have to give it a try. I just want a decent place to take my wife and family to have a good time in our little boat-I just want to have a fun, safe time pulling the kids on the tube and I would like to learn to ski while I'm at it. I have a friend that has been pretty heavy into skiing for years now and he says White Lake is dangerous on Saturdays.
I live near Stedman and am about 35 minutes away from White Lake. I guess Waccamaw would be a little farther away. I saw that 2 public ramps are listed for Waccamaw, do you use one of these and which one do you recommend?

Tim-Looked at a map, looks like Waccamaw may be at least another 30-40 minutes away for me.

You want to use the ramp on the southern side, the other ramp, bella coola ramp is a small pond that has a narrow canal that connects to big creek, hard to navigate on that one. I used to ski with a couple all the time from Stedman, Lynn and Wayne A. They have a '87 2001, blue and silver. What boat do you have? The shallow parts of LW are great for standing in the water and helping someone learn to ski.

I may have met them a couple of months ago, I only know of one SN in Stedman and it is a blue trimmed 2001. I stopped and talked with the guy about his boat but can't remember his name now to save my life. I'll ask my wife as she knows his wife, probably same guy though. He said he didn't even take it out last year because one of his daughters was on a traveling softball team.
A few weeks ago I bought a '79 ski tique from a guy in Smithfield. It hasn't been in the water since I went for a ride with the PO. Been too busy working and doing other stuff.
Thanks for the ramp advice.

Hi
Just reading what you guys were saying about White Lake. We use to go there for a week every year for our family vacation with our 1970 Mustang. We always had to get up at 6:30am to get good water for skiing, and then back out again around 7pm to get good water again. Kept the boat docked during the day, because after 9am, there are so many boats on the lake, there is no good water for anything at that point. A great family lake though. We have alot of good memories with all of us and our CC on that lake. We still have and are still using the Mustang. We took it to White Lake Labor Day weekend 2 years ago. Again we got up early to get some good water. I have never been to Lake Waccamaw, but I am a little scared of the gators. Either choice I am sure is not bad. Enjoy your CC, and safe boating.

Tim-thought about trying Waccamaw Saturday but postponed due to weather and glad I did. One of these days I guess...
Jane-great story on White Lake. I grew up going to White Lake with my parents (we had access to a cottage there for a few years), we had a couple of small john boats and a small outboard ski boat for a while but no CC. I grew up seeing and admiring the SN's and ST's though and that is where I caught the bug.

I have a 66 Mustang. The weather wasn't great this past weekend. Constant wind out of the southeast which had the northeast side whitecapping and the most boats I've ever seen on LW. I went Friday and Saturday and had to park 1/2 a mile from the ramp. There were a lot of boats from South Carolina there on Friday. It's been unusally windy the last couple of days and raining today, though I can't complain about the rain, we need it.

Awesome!! I have a kneeboard that came with the boat and am looking forward to giving that a try in between pulling my kids on the t-word (I'm trying to avoid the wrath of Pete)!! Gotta pick me up a rope with a handle.
I couldn't see your pic of LW here at work, I'll give it another try at home this evening.

Tim-finally got a chance to look at your pic, nice looking Mustang, I like the red, white and blue!!
I'll keep a look out for you when on LW. I'm seeing that Sat's weather is looking pretty good (at least no T-storms predicted), might try to get down that way late Sat afternoon for a ride.

We finally had some decent weather the last two days, no wind. We skied all day yesterday and from 11 till 5:30 today and I'm tired. I won't be at the lake on Saturday, going to see Tom Petty in concert.

Glad you got some good skiing in and hope you enjoyed the concert!!
We made it out to LW Sat.!! We didn't get on the water until about 4pm but that was what I wanted to do with the kids and no bimini top, the ramp was busier than I expected but the lake is so big we had no problem getting a spot all to ourselves. Water was a little rough to start with and then calmed down some. Kids rode the tube (me included). I managed to get up on the knee board, a first for me! Gotta get me some skiis or a wake board now!
I saw some boats parked in the shallow area at the park end of the lake. I was a little scared to try to make my way in through the lilly pads not knowing the lake and if there would be anything to hit or not. Is there a beach all along the park end where you can get out or is it just certain areas? Any areas to really avoid going into?
You can email me at kaveritte@intrstar.net if you want.

the tube does have a purpose, it gets the kids use to the water for when they step up to ski's, Now if you told us you was a bass fishin off the boat then we would have a problem

If the kids are big enough get them on the kneeboard ASAP. They soon wont even want to ride the blowup device. All my kids started out on kneeboards then progressed to either doubles or the wakeboard. My middle daughter still loves to have a ride on the kneeboard.
Actually I think having 2 kneeboards is possibly the most fun you can have with your kids. I probably once a year have a double kneeboard run with my now 21 year old daughter for old time sake. Trouble is the kids are getting better and I'm not.
------------- If you're going through hell, keep going

That's my plan...get them used to the whole boating deal and being pulled behind a boat with the tube and then let them see how much fun I'm having knee boarding (or skiing, or wake boarding hopefully soon). It won't be long before they are going to want to try it too. Might have to get another kneeboard, thanks for the suggestion.
Now where are my fishing poles?
