Hi! I am new at all of this and know very little about all the proper names of everything on the motor. I have a 1976 Mustang w/ 302 ford motor.(I guess direct drive is common, guess that will draw a big laugh But when I started the boat 2 weeks ago I forgot to lubricate the impeller in the water pump. After running it for less that 10minutes I noticed the manifolds were very hot to the touch and shut it off. Replaced the impeller and started it again. This time it ran for another 10 minutes only to find it was still very hot in a short time. WELL- I now know that there is NOT any water getting to the water pump. I don't know if I have ruined the motor, I don't know where the problem is, and I don't know where to start. Can I take the hose off where the fresh water comes in and check anything? ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated.......Oh, I have changed the oil, new belts.

zmom,
welcome to the great world of Correct Crafts!

Give us a little history, Did you take the boat out for a test-drive before buying it? Any problems then?

Where did you have the boat when you started it and it overheated? (in the water? / or on your drive?) After replacing the impeller, didnt you check the temp gauge?

Were you getting any water out the exhaust? (btw, thats a good thing)

Hang in there..you'll love the boat...got any pics?

There is a recent thread about those being upside down. The hoses could also be reversed depending on the model. Try a search for RWP.

The boat was in the water during all of this.No I don't know if there was water coming out of the exhaust. I don't know that the temp gauge works properly as it was going up and down. I have had the boat for 3-4 years and it has always been great. Last year I did notice that it wanted to bog down and sometimes would quit and after a few minutes it would start and be fine. But it would pull out and run a while then bog down again. My biggest concern is that I haven't really messed up the motor. Oh yes, I don't know alot of the initals for things such as RWP-is that raw water pump? Don't laugh if that isn't it-
I just need info.......
Thanks for any help guys!

yes RWP check the thread about it and the proper location the set-screw should be facing and we'll assume that it is plumbed right as that should not have changed replacing the impeller.

Yes, RWP=raw water pump. Did you take the hoses off to change the impeller? I'm not familiar with your particular motor, but it is easy to get those hoses reversed. I bet most of us here have done once!

This is the http://correctcraftfan.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=10162&PN=1 - thread about the flow direction.

You should check to make sure that the water intake fitting on the bottom of the boat is not obstructed, then carefully check the hose from there to the intake of the water pump for leaks, or loose connections, then recheck the impeller for its condition, then on to the thermostat. You can check the stat the old way or just replace it.

if you do not have a sea strainer then you need to get one installed, but if not then you need to check the tranny cooler for blockage. There is a grid on the inside where the water flows through it and moss, algee and other junk can collect there and prevent any water from going to the RWP. So remove the hose that goes to the cooler on the inlet side and check for blockage just be carefull it's a tin can and bends and cracks pretty easy.

You may also find pieces of your previously shredded impeller in the trans cooler

Well I hope you don't because if you do then you installed the RWP backwards as the flow goes hull intake, sea strainer, tranny cooler, then RWP, and then the t-stat housing.

It may be helpful to pull the boat out of the water so you can see if you have water coming out. You mentioned that the temp was going up and down. Between what temps?
I would start with the trans cooler and then pull each of your hoses, one at a time, to check for blockages and replace them if they are old or cracked and tighten them down good to prevent air leaks. Check your t-stat in a pot of water with a thermometer. It sould open at about 143 or 160 depending on what you have in there. I would put in the 143 if it is not already.

One way to check that your RWP is working correctly. While boat is still in the water, pull the hose that goes from the RWP to the t-stat housing at the t-stat end. Point the open end of the hose in a bucket or overboard or in the bilge and fire her up. If water startes coming out like crazy, it is working. It may make a mess, but at least you will know you are getting water flow!

welcome to the site z-mom.

I had the same problem you are having in May. Here is a think to a thread that I had. Everyone really helped out and I found out what was wrong.

http://correctcraftfan.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=10542&KW=shawnmc

Read it and it well help you decide if 1) you RWP is pulling in the appropriate volume of water using the bucket test. or 2) The RWP is pulling water but it is not circulating into the engine. Once you find either one of those things you can then trouble shoot the reason (air leak around a hose or strainer, bad gasket in the RWP,circulating water pump problem, bad thermostat, blockage etc.etc).

I am by no means an expert but learned much more than i ever thought from the guys on this site, as I am sure you will when you are done.

(My problem was the my RWP was not sealing due to a bad machine shop hex-lock.   A new pump and i was on the water.)

Good luck!!!!
