I believe this would also be the third year that a few members get together down in central Illinois at Lake Shelbyville, post Labor Day.

I have always missed this weekend, but don't want to again. Do we know the dates for the gathering? Is it Sept 6th-7th?

Also, can you refresh my memory on hotels? I believe Joel told me once about a so-so lodge on the lake... (Carrie won't do the camping thing)...

OK, fill me in, so I can plan..

Thanks

Mojo,

Talk to Gary about this, at GL he and Lisa were talking about possibly moving the venue to their ski lake, Lake Decatur IIRC.

The resort there is the Eagle Creek resort. http://www.eaglecreekresort.com/ - Eagle Creek . It's right on the water and you can get boat slips but in general I hate this place. They have probably not done a single upgrade to this place since it opened (I'm guessing ~20 years ago). I don't know of any other hotels on the water.

I'm definitely in for this trip. Missed it last year and regretted it. It's a great time with lots of skiing.

Date is probably going to have to be Sept 5-7 as the next weekend is the Northeast Reunion and will interfere with some plans, after that we chance cold weather again. I'll email Gary this weekend and see if there is a chance it will be moved to his site in Decatur, we've been there once and it would certainly work out great for us. Slalom course and jump would be awesome plus docks, picnic tables and a lunch restaurant on the water is a big plus. Camping is a little primative but we'd open the Bounder up as home base for showers and creature comforts.

Either location, we should set a date soon.

I'm up for either place. Doesn't matter to me.. Let's get something firmed up so I can lock in the time. The 5-7th works out great for us..

Jumps, for sure... Wait, I fell off the bar stool at the Goose, I think I'm done with jumps hahaha..

Sorry...I just now got back from an out of town trip....I will get together with Brian and Deb(tomorrow) and see about things so we know what all the options will be.

I will check back in tomorrow with more info.
If our members have no objections...Lake Decatur would be much closer for all and the club facility makes everything soooo easy!

Here is a little more info....if our members are are ok with hosting guests,we are about an hr closer for everyone.
Hotels and restaurants are 10-15 min away, club has a ramp, boats can stay in the water or on the trailer at the club...and all that Alan mentioned.
No one has put the course in this year though??? However...if Joel wants to drop his in , it can stay in for the weekend.
I don't know much about camping at the club...I believe that tent camping is allow for a small fee.
Alan...not sure if any spots are open for the Bounder...we can check today. We have added several new members this year.Of course we would host you and anyone else at our home(like we Rob and Dena did). I think Deb and Brian mentioned doing the same.

More to come tonght!

Also...Brian and I live nearly next door...we can both host anyone who wants to stay....would have to do the fire pit and cook out thing too!

Provided we have two options(lake wise)...I am guessing we will.

Which site does everyone prefer? I an good either way.

Considerations are:

Shelbyville is a bigger lake, better for cruising and swimming, natual wilderness surrounds it, cleaner water(very nice quality) and offers camping.Very pretty lake. Hotel on the lake...Joel can comment.

Lake Decatur...lake is in the city. Facility makes it easy to be on the water and keep food and bev at the shore...docks...ramp...pavilion etc.Very easy to launch and ski. 15 min for my house and Brians...we can host guests. Hotels 10 min away from club(mt Zion).45 min closer to Chicago.

Both lakes are gererally calm and traffic will be low on either.

Fun will be had either way!

I am heading out tomorrow for Minn...back in two weeks. I do have internet there.

I talked to Gary today while he was driving to Minnesota. Thought I should chime in on a few things.

At GL, I was talking to Alan and Gary about a few things. I have thrown out the option for Clinton Lake the last 2 years. It is closer yet for you northern travelers. I think the biggest advantage that this lake has is the fact it is a power plant lake. Beings that we are going early in September won't make it so important, but if it is a bit cold, the water is always warm. Plus, the lake is a bit narrower and you can ALWAYS find great water no matter which way the wind is blowing from. Alan wasn't aware of this, but there is a great campground there too. There is a little restaurant on the lake so people can eat all the time. Those are the pros of that lake. The cons would be the hotels. The would be about a 20 minute drive from the lake. You would have to drive to Clinton, IL to get a room. I'll tell you right now that the hotels in Clinton will be comperable to those at Shelbyville. I have stayed at Eagle Creek for business functions and it is strictly a hotel. It isn't the Hilton or anything, but it isn't a Motel 6 either. I'd stay there if I needed a bed. They have a good bar and a restaurant, so there are decent things about Eagle Creek. I have no idea of what hotels are in Mt. Zion, but looks like we need to get some info from Brian and Deb or Gary and Lisa. It is a real bummer that there is poor camping at Decatur. It will effect us because we will drive down for the day and toodle home that evening. We are about an hour away.

I can't ask for plans to change because it sounds like there are more hotel people than campers which is cool. I just wanted to throw out the 3rd option of Clinton Lake. I personally think it is a great lake that is clean and has food on the water along with super skiing. It is just something to think about.

We'll be there no matter what, but I guess I'd be more inclined to go to Clinton or Shelbyville due to better quality skiing and the ablilty to camp.

Again, just throwing out the option.

Here's my take on it gang and please understand that we'll be there no matter where it ends but the past couple of years have been such a huge success in part due to the camping after a day on the water. I'd hate to have to see everyone check out at dusk when the fun is really just starting. We've always had fun reviewing all the video and photos on a tv by the motorhome and sharing some cold ones and food by the fire. For those staying in hotels our Bounder will be available for you to use as you need. All you need to do is bring food, there are enough camp chefs around to grill it up for you.

I'm all ears to hear what everyone thinks of Clinton. Todd has assured us of a great campground which I think is important. Hotels are not far away and if you're not camping you'll have to pack up no matter what lake we go to.

I think Lake Decatur would be a blast and like Johhny I'd be good for a few laughs off the jump. It is a really nice ski site, but if we all have to pack up at the end of the day it just takes something away from the weekend. It's hugh of Gary and Brian's families to open up their homes but I still vote for a lake with campsites.

Alan,
How far is it by water from the camp ground where you guys have stayed to the Resort on Shelbyville? Are ther piers at the campground to tie off the boats for awhile??

Does anyone knoe of a place that would bring in camping trailers, like Reed found in WI?

While I think Todd's suggestion for warm water is great (because my daughters always freezing), I think we should stick to having a central camping party area like in Shelbyville. Being 45 min farther is not a make or break for us..

Eagle creek has slips available for nightly mooring as well, so no problem if you don't want to pull the boat..

My vote is Shelbyville..

Dave, Eagle Creek is only a few miles from the campground by water but tying up at the state park and walking to the campground is probably not going to work(tie up is not great and the campground is pretty far from the launch.) Joel just drove over to the campground from Eagle when he stayed there 2 years ago.

We'll have to wait and hear from Todd because he did say there was ample camping at Clinton and hotels nearby so that is still in the running. Todd, Dana and I are thinking we'll have an open weekend before labor day and thought we'd check out the camping at Clinton if we could hook up with you and Rene for some skiing. Give me a call if you're interested 630-209-3619

Sorry gang but I really thought Lake Decatuer would be a better site but without the camping we're taking something away from the weekend and I don't think that's the way to go.

OK, sounds like I should shed a little more light on the subject. It was late when I read the post.

The reason I put in a vote for Clinton was simply due to better skiing. I guess you can call Clinton my home lake so I am familiar with it. Shelbyville is a good lake, but it is really wide and sometimes hard to find good water. If you were to do a google map search and look at the lake, it is a giant horseshoe. There are shorelines to protect you whatever way the wind is blowing. It is tough to do that at Shelbyville because it is really big. I know there are a lot of barefooters who come along with slalom skiers so I am looking for quality water for everyones interests. Also, there is boondocks the restaurant. This is a far cry from a nice restaurant, but the food is awesome. You also have food at the Marina along with gas if people need it.

Now for the campground. It is not as far of a drive to the water from the campground compared to Shelbyville. Lets be honest here, we are talking 1/2 mile or so. No big deal. The campground is nice and the bathroom/shower facilities are good too. Renee and I always commented on that when we camped there. Now it has been 2 years since we have camped there, but we drive through it all the time. To be honest, I still like the campground at shelbyville because of the huge trees and super protection, but for practical purposes like a solid ski weekend, I'd have no problems whatsoever at Clinton. Heck, Renee and I camp there in the fall just for fun. It is a clean and well maintained campground and is a 2 minute drive from the ramp. You have to pull your boats each night. No overnight mooring.

I absolutely understand everyones concerns with lodging and such. No matter what, we will be there! I still think that Shelbyville is a great locaton for both campers and people who request a roof (with the weather the last two years....I should probably do the hotel). I agree with Joel that they haven't done a lot of updates in the last few years, but it is a place to rest your head and take a nice shower. Again, there is a restaurant and a nice bar in the resort that some people may like. Plus a place to tie your boat up overnight.

I think that Decatur would be a great time and I would like to make a day trip out of it, but having the ability to throw up a tent and sleep for free is kinda nice too.

Again, this is just more information about a possible 3rd location. You can throw it out the window and I am absolutely fine with it. If we opt not to do Clinton, my vote will probably be Shelbyville. I agree with Alan that it is fun to hang out around the bounder and sip brew and watch video. We have a great group of people and the visiting is awesome.

I think that the best thing to do for people who are intersted in coming is to look at lodging online. IF you were to do Clinton, you would have Champaign and the town of Clinton as lodging options. Actually, I forgot about the Super 8 in Farmer City. That is about 10 miles from the campground. I have never stayed there, but it is a Super 8. They did some remodeling there 2 years ago I think, but it ain't no Hilton. If people were to choose Shelbyville, the closest town with a hotel would be Sullivan, IL....I think. Still a 15 minute drive unless you stayed at the resort. If you were to do Decatur, we have to wait on Gary to give us that info.

Just filling everyone in on some more details.

Sounds good Alan.

Let me comment on tying up your boat at Eagle Creek. Firstly, it's several miles away even via water from the campground. The docks are pretty far away from the hotel and are probably 100 feet below the actual level of the parking lot- the lake is somewhat canyon-like at the resort. The docking facilities are top notch, and amazing. However, I could never leave my boat there since it is completely out of sight. When we were there in 2004 there was an incident of vandalism where some teens got a hold of some beer and took a golf cart on an incredible run of vandalism. They ran over a bunch of lights and landscaping and whatnot, and destroyed the cart. They didn't touch the boats but the cart went down probably 100 feet of stairs all the way down to the dock! Bottom line is, I don't have a warm fuzzy feeling about my boat being at those docks overnight and again, it's miles away from Wolf Creek campground.

So, we paid for a slip the whole time but never used it. We just trailered over to Wolf Creek to hang out with everyone else. This worked fine and was not that inconvenient. This is probably what I'll do if Beth and Madison join me in the fall. If they don't, I'll camp.

Eagle Creek has some major issues with cleanliness, service, and maintenance in my opinion. It's like some spooky, weird has-been resort somewhat like The Shining. You sit down at the bar, and the arms of the chair are actually stained brown with dirt. The carpet in the hallways is stained and nasty in spots. The rooms are marginally clean compared to a standard hotel, IMO. You sit down at breakfast for the buffet, and the table has only been wiped around the salt/pepper shakers and condiments leaving egg bits and crumbs behind. It's like the whole place has just been neglected.

The place also seems to attract some pretty obnoxious and inconsiderate guests. From the vandals the first time to obnoxious weddings and receptions, drunk fishermen in fishing tourneys there, etc. The room next to us last time had a huge party complete with a guitar player/singer going ALL NIGHT. I went over there and yelled at them several times personally (ask Ken Spurling if I know how to yell at somebody), and called management and nothing was done. We got no sleep that night.

The first time I stayed there, I said I'd never stay there again. The second time I stayed there, I said the same thing. However, I think Lake Shelbyville is so neat and fun that I'll probably stay there again if I have to. It's an awesome lake and that campground is an awesome place to hang out.

Alan,

Seeing as there would be no way we'll camp other than if some company would roll a trailer in there (maybe an option), a hotel is a must. If you can take a few minutes to really survey this issue while down there, I'd appreciate it..

I've heard a lot of good things about lake Shelbyville itself, more so than Decatur.. I'll look forward to your report on Clinton..

Have a great time !!!

Moj' -
Here is an idea I'm looking into for Shelbyville. 16 miles to the east is a RV/Camper rental place.

http://www.happytrailsrvrental.com/ - Happy Trails RV

If I can arrange my schedule (I currently have a conflict on Sunday to sort out) I'll rent a pop-up camper and use it at the campground.

We don't necessarily need a hotel, I just don't want to be soggy if it rains.

Who knows, they might even deliver and pick up.

Steve-o,
Good find.. Yes they will deliver, set up, clean and dump the crapper for $100-125 bucks.. Min 2 night rental.. I was looking at a 26 foot self contained unit, with the above mentioned fees and it puts the price @ $175/night. It's a little bit pricey, but it would be fun if we were all together in one area. They don't really want to travel to Clinton, but they make regular stops at Shelbyville... I don't know what the lodge cost, but it sounds like Joel has had hi fill of the place.

Thanks for the reference. It's a viable option for us..

Mojo, steve, Joel..

Check out this http://www.buoysbythelake.com/CabinsForRent.html - website a give them a call, ask for Matt or his Mom. From talking to him they have 2 cabins, a 24x26 and a 20x20 that appear to be available our weekend. They are 1/8 mile off the lake but are associated with the Findlay Marina so they could hook you up with dockage for the weekend. They are about 4 mile drive by car to Wolf Creek campground and between Eagle Creek and the Campground by water.    Rates are $85/ night for the small one and $125 for the large one.

Sounds like Shelby may work out better for you guys so thats ok with me. I did some calling for camper rentals to Clinton and this guy with the cabins will run some up there for you for a charge. Think it's worth a call and check it out.

Bad news gang.

Can't make it the 6th. It's the same weekend my neighbor has his big music festival/hootenanny in his back yard, and I'm performing a set there. I can't believe I didn't see this conflict earlier but it's just not going to work out. If these are the concrete dates, I'm out. Have fun...

Well Joel is the reason we started going to Shelbyille a few years ago and I hate for him to miss this again so an option would be to move the weekend out 2 weeks and go to warmer water in Clinton. Joel, you sure you can't get your manager to get you out of the gig?

Just an idea, let me have the weekend to see if Clinton is workable and then we'll have to make some decsions on date and location monday so folks can get the time off.

This sounds like a cool trip, but we probably can't make it this year. I will be in Shelbyville for Labor Day weekend though. We are staying at http://www.whitetailcrossingcabins.com/index.htm - WhiteTail Crossings . Never been there, but some friends of mine were there about a couple months ago and recommended it. I think it's relatively close Eagle Creek. We used to go to Shelbyville every Memorial Day until the kids arrived. We camped at Whitley Creek.

Never been to Clinton, but warm water sounds good. I would be interested to hear more about what you find.

Well Gang, Thanks to the Weitekamps we had one of the best weekends of the summer "SO FAR".

Clinton Lake is the balls. It has everything that we've enjoyed at Shelbyville, nice campground with very new and clean shower facilities, the boat ramp is a little friendlier, there is a little restaurant a few hundred feet from the ramp with good tie up. The restaurant will still be open through september and will be convenient for a quick bite. $5 rib eye sandwich that was overhanging my plate! Fuel on the lake if needed. We struggled a little bit with wind in the afternoon but the shape of the lake let's you move around and we found decent water middle of the day, with the lower traffic after labor day this place will be ideal.

Other bonuses are it is atleast one hour shorter driving distance than Shelby for the northerners and unlike Shelby it is all highway except the last 10 miles. The are 2 motels off the exit, a Budget Motel and a Days Inn which is fairly new Rates at the Days Inn are $63.99 ,2 beds 4 people per night and do accept pets. The other place is cheaper but it's a dive, I think it's one of those rent by the hour places so maybe Quinner could make it down. Both of these motels are right off the highway and a 10 miles drive to the campground. Days Inn # is 309-928-9434, the Budget Motel # is 309-928-2157. There is a large filling station right next door and that would be your best stop before getting to the lake whether your staying at the Motels or not.

Here's the best part about this place, Todd has always told me how warm the water is but can you say "Hot Tub". The water temp at the outlet side of the lake is almost body temp. It is unreal and if we push the weekend back to Sept 19-21 to accomodate the few that can't make it earlier this will make a hugh difference as to whether we enjoy the weekend or not. We could end up with a 60 degree overcast day and we'll still be warmer in the water without wetsuits than on the boat. This could really make or break the trip especially for the kids.

If there are some who still want to investigate renting a camper you could talk to the guy at Buoys by the lake from my post a few days ago. He said they would drop some campers there for a delivery fee. I content that this may be more work for you than it's worth though because you still have to outfit it. I'd stay at the days Inn and pack a cooler full of food, there will be plenty of camp fires to cook on and the CCfan hospitality will take over and you'll be fine.

We also meet a couple in another Bounder this weekend, the only group of people in the world that compare to CC people are Bounder people. Bounder owners have their own little sub culture and we meet some interesting people. Anyway, Bounder Jim, his wife and their 3 foot Iguana camp there just about every weekend, we exchanged info and he said to let him know when we're coming down and he'll grab all the camping sites we need. There are a few groups of sites with trail access to lake where we can tie the boats up during the day if needed. The plan is he'll get in early friday am and hold the best sites available for us.

So, we have 2 things to determine, Shelby or Clinton and weekend of 5-6 or 19-21.

I vote Clinton weekend of 19-21, that later week may clear up some schedule issues Raindog and M3Fan had. Possibly Scottb can join us now.

One more comment,

Todd, the warmer side of the lake is closed down October 10 so we'll be able to ski right near the outlet where we we're saturday am.

Alan, hopefully the large sandwich was not a result of the effects of the lakewater. Seriously though, Todd and Renee seem to be pretty healthy so the cooling system in the plant must be working correctly- no heavy water mixing in the heat exchangers.

Sounds like a ton of fun. I vote for clinton and the later weekend. How close is the Days Inn?

Knowing it closes that late makes me feel much better. Even if there are people skiing there, we can still drop anchor and enjoy the "hot tub" and man that is nice when we are just soakin' in the water. Feels good on the sore muscles too.

I am all for the later weekend. Want to make sure that everyone can make it who wants to come.

Joel, don't speake too fast, we don't have kids yet. Heck, they may come out with 3 eyes! Its a big joke, but the water is great.

Alan gave great details. The days inn is about 12 miles from the ramp. There is a closer ramp for the people staying in Farmer City at the days inn. It will save you about 5 miles from where the campers will be. It is a super ramp. Actually, there are 2 ramps closer, but one has a 1 mile idle zone. NO FUN!

Days Inn is about 10-11 miles from the campground. Exit 159 off of 74 east to rt 54. It's right at the interchange then a straight shot to the lake. You will not believe how much easier it is to find this place especially in the dark for those coming in late friday night. I can post detailed directions later if this is where we end up.

I did notice that most of the locals were a bit peculiar sporting a protruding belly, long grey beards, pony tails and a fishing rod growing out of one hand. Possibly the effects of heavy water but more likely the result of a good life in the country. Hopefully the later.

Does anyone have any prop recommendations for heavy water? Heck, we might all come out of this with super-powered boats. I can picture us all glowing in the dark while barefooting at 60 MPH.

Seriously, I'm getting excited about this! Sounds great.

You gonna make it? If so, I might have to leave the wife at home. Moj' too. Hard to lock a tent.

I vote for Clinton (I feel a little dirty after I typed that...) on the 19th-21st. Short of breaking the boat, we'd be a lock. The 12th - 14th is out for us for sure.

Thanks for all the field scouting guys. This sounds like a great cap to the summer.

Renee and I will be there. Bringing the boat. It will be harvest season late in September so I will be on call. May have to leave for a while, but will come back as time allows.

But count us in. I'm sure that there will be family attending too. Dad and the rest of the fam got a big kick out of Alan and Dana and some of the stories. I actually think the fam from Indianapolis may come back again. They can't wait to meet you all. So there will be probably 7 on the pontoon plus our boat.

Welcome to your world right? Seen stuff....gotta watch out man...that bounder cult thing...I understand it's pretty spookey. The highway to hell on a bounder is one badass ride...especially pulling a boat on a windy day right?

That's a good idea Joel. We were at the lake both Saturday and Sunday and the place had a bit of a crowd there. My advise to anybody wanting to stay at the Days Inn book early. I'd sure hate to have the situation where it is full and people have to drive even further.

Weather was great, water was warm, and the skiing looked super. Sure can't wait for the big weekend!

I saw more ski boats there this weekend! There is a MasterCraft dealer next door and he must be doing well. But there were some really nice air nautiques there too! We used to really stand out with a inboard, but now we are just one of the crowd.

Gary, really looking forward to seeing your new ride and I think it will blend in real well with some of these other Air's at the lake. Anybody ever seen one that had graphics like a airplane? It had the rivit marks and "panels" like a bomber would. Never have seen graphics on a Nautique like those before.

Again, my advise is to book early!

Alan, I don't know where you were thinking of camping, but I wouldn't recommend camping or reserving spots in the "D" section. When Renee and I drove through last weekend it had "NO ALCOHOL" posted all over. I think that is the older and calm section of the campground. I am not saying that we are a bunch of rowdies, but we may want to consider staying close to where we were a few weeks ago. I think those were the largest spots available. When you got back into some of the others, they got pretty small and sunny. Just my .02. Where were you thinking of reserving at?

Todd, Before we left there a few weeks ago Dana and I walked the entire campground, we scouted out which sites were on the trails that drop down to the lake. Also crossed off the No Alcohal sites. I don't have my map with me at work so I don't recall exactly which sites they were. Plan right now is to find out how many sites we need and I'm going to email the Bounder Dude, he'll be there friday am and will round up our sites and hold them for us till we arrive. I think we'll be fine.

Super plan. I think Renee will get off work early and take the gear and boat over. I will tag up with everyone when I get off work.

If you need any help planning, just let us know. We are close and can reserve if you can't get a hold of the guy.

Will talk later!

Man...all this planning...I think we will just show up! I will just find the bounder people and know we made it!

Todd...We were at the state finals in Du Quion this weekend and saw a Super Air furnished by the Greenville folks...it had custom graphics somewhat like you mentioned. Loren was in that boat all day and helped judge the pro wakeboard division....he had a blast. His coach qualified for nationals in the pro Div.

Helden smoked his competition in the 9 and under...both passes were perfect...landed all thirteen tricks...got big air...now the bad news. He came in second by 50 points because three of the tricks are too advanced for the age group and did not score... 1000 points could not be counted. Being our first tournament we not up on the scoring rules. The tourament director really felt bad about it because someone should have caught it and would have easily taken first. Hell...no biggie...he made a great run, got the croud going , had fun and was not nervious a bit!

Great weekend.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Reserved a room at the Days Inn, however, I'd sure like to rent a pop-up and hang at the campground. We found a rental place for Shelbyville, but it is about 1-1/2 hours from Clinton.

Anybody know of anyplace near Clinton where one could be rented? Is there a website for the campground?

Gary,
That is really cool about Helden. Well, not the part about being penalized for overachieving, but for being able to perform in excess of the rules.

The twins have gotten pretty comfortable on their board this summer. They always ask when they will be as good as Helden. I think they are a little envious, but I've been able to make him an inspiration.

Gary, Dana discovered wakeboarding this summer and she's pretty much hung up the skis. She'll be up for a few pointers from Loren for sure. You can see the improvement every time we go out and she's having a ball.
