Someone emailed me a link to this 20/20 story about aged tires and I thought I'd share it.

The story is about tires that have sat on the shelf for years and are sold as new, but because of the age of the tire they pose a safety hazard.

The story tells you how to decipher the code on the side-wall of the tire which will tell you when the tire was produced.

We all know old tires are dangerous, but I did not realize ‘new’ tires could be so old. I'm sure the vast majority of tires sold are fine, but it is something to think about when purchasing new tires.

I hope you find the story interesting and helpful...

That's pretty disturbing. I would bet the problem is worse with low demand tires like on our trailers. We then don't put many miles on them and they get even older.

Saw this problem about ten years ago with motorcycle tires.Dunlops in particular. You could pull a brand new set off the shelf and the sidewalls would be all cracked and dry rotted. The ones that looked good would inevitably come back a few weeks later looking pretty scary.I don't know about cars, but motorcycle tire distributors now store their tires in humidified, climate controlled warehouses to prevent this.

       Interesting story.
