I have a what is at this point and time a stock engine in my 76 Ski Nautique. Is this engine reverse rotation? I need to know if I need a special gear for my new distributor?

Yes, it is VERY likely that your '79 has reverse rotation (RH prop).

When facing the front of the engine, if the pulleys turn counter clockwise it's right hand rotation. This name comes from standing at the rear, say at the transmission and the pulleys turn to the right.
