Hello,

I have a 98 Sport with the EFI GT40 and the fuel pump in the fuel cell is working intermittently. I have changed out the kill switch and thought I had it fixed. It was working well and now it is doing it again. Turn the key and it comes on, turn it off and nothing. I hear a clicking when I turn the key when the pump does not respond. I am not sure if this is the pump or the relay or something else? Anyone have experience with this problem and if so what was the fix here? I really appreciate the help this is my first experience with the EFI all my Nautiques have been carb. Up until now the engine has run top notch. I appreciate the help.

Keep in mind there are 2 fuel pumps. Are you sure it's the FCC HP pump? Intermittent problems with the pump firing could be the pump or the relays. May as well start with the relays because they are much cheaper than pumps.

Joel (M3Fan) has a good point on the relays. I've heard of lots of problems with them. It's like the contact ratings of these relays is marginal for the amp load of the pumps.

If you have a volt meter and are handy with one, (or a friend) you may want to check the voltage at the pump and compare that to the "line" side (battery voltage) of the relay. A voltage drop will indicate bad contacts in the relay. Some basic checking can save you running around changing parts.

I appreciate the information here. I ordered a few relays from SKIDIM today. I have not looked at where the relays are located on the engine. If someone can let me know there location that would be great. I will use the meter and run a test. I appreciate the help.

They are on the very back of the engine, above the transmission.
