New member here and I need some help. I have a 87' Ski 2001 and I went out to the boat today and It would not turn over. It would Crank and crank and crank but it would not turn over. I just put a new battery in and I don't know what it might be?

Welcome aboard Matt! You've found a great group of folks here, and I'm sure some of them will be able to help you more on this topic.

Did anything other than the battery change right before this trouble? It almost has to be fuel or fire from what you said. I'm guessing fire.

Did you smell gas while cranking?

No I do not smell gas when cranking. I have not had this problem b4. when you say Fire do you mean spark plug?

Yes. If you have a carbureted engine and didn't smell gas, then that may be your issue.

Matt, Since it will turn over but not fire, you're on the right track with the gas or spark problem. Since it has happened before, the first thing I would suspect is spark. Check to see if you are getting voltage to the coil. Do you have a meter of a test light? It should be the purple wire on the coil. Check it while it's cranking. It could be as simple as the ignition switch. If you have volts, try squirting some gas down the carb and see if it will fire. Check back with us and we'll go from there. Don't forget to get water to the boat if it's not in the lake! Has it had a tune-up lately?

spray some starting fluid through the carb while starting it, if it fires for a second then you have fuel delivery issues, if it doesn't you have an ignition problem.

OK, so went back to the boat last night and I looked at the battery and the negative wire to the battery had a lot of corrosion so I got it all off and it started on the first crank. I took it out and ran it for about 15 min and it seamed fine do you think it was that? as for a tune up I just bought the boat in August and I changed the oil, filter, and spark plugs. Is there anything more that I should do for a tune up?

For the rest of the tune up, Id do cap, rotor, impeller, fuel filter, then set the dwell, timing and idle. Also change the tranny fluid.

FYI, the description of your problem was misleading- which makes it hard to help. Cranking = turning over, aka the engine was spinning- which yours clearly wasnt. You might want to go clean the rest of the connections from your battery (both positive and ground) to be sure the same thing doesnt happen again in the future!

Next time you're at the auto supply, get one of these.
Battery post and terminal cleaner:




Even with a new battery, the posts and terminals need to be cleaned. Dirty and corroded connections may have even been the problem to begin with. Well, now you have a new battery!! It also doesn't hurt to put some grease on the posts/terminals when you're done. Keeps the corrosion down. There are also products you can buy that will help.

Yes, you had a few of us going there with the "crank crank crank" statement. What did you mean by cranking?? Clicking?
