I put a new Teleflex water temp gauge in 3 weeks ago and it hovers around 150ish even after a cruise and sudden stop. The water temp down here in Texas is around 70 right now. The old temp gauge during this past summer got up to 160 easy. Is it possible that the temp won't get to 160 because the water temp and ambient temp outside is so much colder? I was going to wait until next summer to check, but thought I would ask since a lot of you guys run up in the colder parts of the country. Bad gauge maybe????

Kirk,
Did you put in a new sender with the new gauge? 150ish isn't bad. What temp T stat do you have in the engine?
The T stat controls the engine temp. The water temp of the lake has nothing to do with the engine running temp.

did not put in new sending unit. I figured if it was working with the last gauge I could leave it alone. 160 T stat.

I feel that new sender should always be installed when with a new gauge even if the ohm range of the sender matches.

No, it's easy. The sender will be on the front end of the intake manifold. It looks like a 1/2" hex brass pipe plug with a wire terminal in the top of it. Don't put any pipe dope or Teflon tape on the pipe threads. The sender is a variable resister that changes the voltage to the gauge as the engine temp changes. (the temp gauge is really a volt meter!) The ground for the circuit is the engine block. Tape or dope may interfere with the grounding.

I have a 150 in mine. It is fully open around 155. So while driving the gauge reads about 160, then cools back to 155 after sitting for a min.
