I've been reading a lot about what happened in Mumbai in our local papers. What I'd like to hear is a European opinion and point of view. Would you favor us?

Also, which online newspaper would you say is the most objective and reputable in your part of the world?

Thanks!

Thanks Roger...and I didn't mean to leave the rest of you guys out; especially if opinions vary from one area to another.

How about the opinions that don't make the papers?

Hi Greg.

The general feeling here is its a attempt to destabilize India and Pakistani relations to make the Pakistani troops move from Afghan borders where US and UK in Afghanistan are taking the Taleban out on both sides of the border,to the Indian borders giving time for the Taleban to regroup.

Thanks again Roger. That's more info in one statement than I've gotten from a big handful of long articles besides names and timelines. It also makes good sense and tends to fit with what I've read. The word here is that progress is good against the Taliban...is the same story told on your shores?

I asked this question because I have no real idea of what life is like in an area with so many different people and such close borders. Over here we may have different accents from state line to state line, and we may have different discussions over something different for dinner; but we're mostly similar in our core beliefs IMHO.

It's also said that Obama will be tested. Have you heard that story?

I think Bush would like a new head trophy to hang on the wall with Bin Lardin on it when he leaves the White House, yes your guys are picking off the Taliban with remote flying bombs, took a Uk terrorist out only the other week, think its getting a bit hot for Bin Lardin.

Obama tested? If you mean terrorist and countrys will push him to see what he is made of, yes they will.

For me now comes the hard part fix America in 4 years or at best 8 think you will all be paying allot more Tax, can only think of what we have had over here with are lot,not too clued up on the problems in the US. Ten years back we moved from Conservative to time for change New Labour because the Cons had become a mess as a party with no real leader, but Labour had Tony Blair, so in he came with all this more for all which meant Gov spending when up and up selling all the reserves we had in gold and borrowing more and more, which has given us a welfare state of sorts, and yes taxes went up too + lots of new ones, now the world has hit the skids, what's the new plan borrow more just a trillion or two and we can all pay it back later which works out to be around 40,000.00 for every one in the UK.

Yes we need a welfare system to help when your down, but that's ok if everyone will work but we have lots that just live off the system because its so easy too.

It looks much the same your at the Change time hope it works out better for you guys.

I could not have said that better! This is the overall feeling we have out here too.

But I did not follow that item very closely, because in Belgium one of the most important trials is about to start.
21 persons where arrested for another kind of extremism: nazism! These guys are skinheads and neo nazi's who are member of a group called BBET (a faction of the so called "Blood and Honour" group), and, the leaders from this group were colleagues from my unit...!!!
Never saw that one coming!
They were planning several bomb attacks on key points here in Belgium in order to destabilize the country...
The investigation went on for two years and an undercover agent followed all their reunions and meetings. At their arrest, the police found lots of weapons and self made bombs...

Weird stuff happens. I know someone that was a cop and in charge of drug contraband with 2 other guys. One of the guys, the straightess shooter in the group started using, stealing and selling. By the time it all came to light, it was a huge contraversy. Totally devestated the 2 good cops because it happened under their nose because they trusted each other so much.

Proves that not one of us, soldier or not, are perfect.

It is frightening when you take an oath and then have the ability and strength to dishonor your country.

You can tell alot about a person by how they conduct their personal life too. An oath in marriage, an oath to your country or a personal oath to yourself...they all relate.

I would not be very happy to have a "wingman" standing beside me who does not have strong values.

Guess Bill Clinton showed us it was ok? He screwed up...but the big issue was the lieing that followed.

Scary world.........sex and money.

What were these guys like when you knew them?

Eric, a lot of our dope comes up from Mass. Lawrence is a big source town. Profiling on the Maine Turnpike works pretty well. A lot of the people running it up here have Mass plates and don't look like most Mainers. They can be profiled pretty easily, if the cops dare do that. There are a lot of addicts up here. We never used to have crime like robberies. They didn't happen. Now we have them every week. In all places rural and in the city.

Our market is continueing to worsen. It's holding its own along I95 and greater Portland, but go into the rural areas and prices are declining. Summer properties aren't selling too well. The appraisal business sucks. I keep waiting for the really low rates to kick off some business but it's not happening yet.

Michelle,
It is very frightening indeed and no, I'm not very happy either about those "wingmen"...
What where they like...? Just guys you could have a normal conversation with in the canteen... Even if there were some differences in opinions, nothing would ever showed they were up to these kind of actions...

I would say these types probably don't see it as disloyalty. Quite the opposite, they probably view their beliefs and actions as the ultimate in national and likely racial loyalty. I would also venture to guess their Nazi ideology preceeded their military enrollment/enlistment.
Kristof, is military service compulsory in Belgium?

Posted By: Kristof
Date Posted: December-04-2008 at 4:52pm
Terp, the compulsory military service has been abolished about 15 years ago.
Dumbest thing the government did! Several polls over the last few years all show more than 75% of the population is pro reistating military service...

I think it would be a good idea to at least try it in the US. At this point I don't think we need it for improving defense, though that would have to be the primary goal. I do think it might be a good way of "molding" our young men and improving the habits and decisions they make. Among other things, I think it would be interesting to see the impact it might have on our crime rates. I don't think the military is the place to carry out social experiments, but you cannot deny the impact, both positive and negative, military service has on the social fabric of a population.

The US military is a volunteer force. Folks volunteer for different reasons. Some people find that it is not the place for them once they join. These people are a huge burdon on the leadership and have a negative impact from the platoon level up.

That is why most true warriors migrate toward the special forces. Every Airborne Ranger, Sapper, or Operator volunteered to do what he is doing. Just because you volunteer, doesn't mean you will be accepted.

A transcript military is completely opposite. They don't want to be there. They can't be kicked out. It is a very challenging concept.
In my opinion that is a horrible concept.

I understand that historically, the US instituted drafts, and created some very successful fighting units. However, I would rather have ten motivated warriors than one hundred conscripts.

We are feeling the impact on our youngsters in order of respect, discipline and moral values right now!
I'm not the guy that says that the army has to be the place to educate children, but we can be just one more cog in the whole "fabrication" process...

Hahahaha... Eric, that has to be one of your most cynic quotes as of yet... Ever take three shots in a row with a bolt action rifle...???

Agreed Skibum, but still if you take the time to work on them (green card from the higher echelon needed though)...

It is indeed, but the benefits at the end of the line are also rewarding... (BTW, they don't get kicked out... they get kicked in!!)

Kris, it wasnt considered a 12" pattern, from a sharpshooters perspective he was way off but not on the last meditated shot. I believe he practiced for that fateful day, and he got what was coming to him,.....as did OJ today!!!!! he had the background and desire to do what he did.
Sanity, I thought it was an honorable suggestion

Hi Guys.

This is the new thing our Gov has now come up with, from now on if you have a mortgage and find you cannot pay through loosing your job it will guarantee the interest on the loan for up to 2 years if you extend your mortgage until you find new work. The max mortgage you can apply this too is 400,000.00.So if this mess runs for less than 2 years we are all ok if not you are out your house.

I think your new Guy many run something like this for you.

uk, programs are in place already at the bank level, they are not highly publicized. they are flexing a bit. its going to take some time to recover from this mess, at least the Gov. finally admitted we are in a recession.
It sure the f is funny on how the gas prices 2 months ago were 4.00 a gallon and this morning I paid 1.56, un fin believable, We are puppets,
I still say in the big picture someone in power let loose of these sloppy loans and new exactly what the outcome would be, they dont just hand out money as they did without knowing the end result
