I really should know better since I've been driving diesels since the late 70's but this year I kept putting off (forgetting) getting the fuel conditioner. Compounding the problem is the station I typically go to doesn't pump that much so I suspect the diesel isn't the true winter blend yet. Yup, yesterday was our first real cold (4*) of the year and going home it gelled up on me. With plenty of pissed off drivers behind me going so slow, I made it 5 miles and within a block of my local Napa. I ran in and got the "emergency" conditioner. It stayed running so I didn't need to pull the fuel filter. I'll get it in the garage today and change out the filter just to be on the safe side.

All diesel here has to be safe till -20°C by law... No need for conditioner here...

Wish it was the same over here but the low temp limit would need to be lowered in most of the areas. -20*C is only -4*F. We do have winter blends but don't think it's regulated. This first cold snap it always the worst. As mentioned, if the station doesn't move lots of diesel, then it's existing summer diesel in the tank is only partially winterized with the first load from the refinery. What really gets me this year, is diesel hasn't come down in price like gas has. Of course this time of the year prices are typically higher due to the demand. Lots of people in the northeast still heat with it. Pete, I am on oil and will be as long as I'm in this house. Heating oil has dropped from $4.50 to $1.89 since the summer (advertised in the paper today). My last fill was $2.09 in November. Diesel at the pump is high $2s. Your right that it hasn't come down as much as everything else. Wonder why?

I paid $2.75 last week for diesel. Remember when it was always cheaper than regular gas!! I hear that's it's the new EPA regulations on the lower sulfur content??? Just like them playing around with the gas, they are doing the same with the diesel - the new diesel is blended with ether animal or soy fats helping them reach the lower sulfur content. The animal fat is the real problem in cold weather. Thanks for the reminder, your cold weather just got here yesterday. it was 48 when i got up and 18 when i got home from work. Luckily we are along the toll road here and the locals pump a lot of fuel. Diesel is slightly under 2.50 here but ive been driving the expedition as gas was 1.39 locally the last couple weeks on gas war wedendays.

I heard that higher diesel prices here have a lot to do with increasing demand for clean diesel overseas. Just one of the many reasons I'll never own a diesel again,don't miss those days. Back then VW told you that you could add 10% gas to stop that problem.Is it not advised today? John, Well, down in the south with the heat and humidity, you have other problems with diesel. The good boat doc called me yesterday and reminded me of the slime/mold that grows in the diesel. With gelling, usually all it takes is adding the additive and at worst changing the fuel filter. With the slime, it's cleaning/purging out the complete system. Tank, lines, filter, injectors and pump. Thanks Bruce....works for us. But me and Patti are here year-round...does get kinda hot and humid in mid summer. Just the way we like it. Got enough "cold and wet" while I was working.

Sean, I agree. I'm not too far from you distance-wise. I have a few pair of the flannel lined jeans and they work great! And Gander Mountain has them in the ladies department.  There was a time when I had to purchase hunting gear and garage gear in the boys department because, although Cabella's sold women's hunting gear and Carhardt's, the "start" size was 12. Didn't work for me. Finally, they've caught up with the times. Chelle'

I wrote that from home Pete, at work I use the computer in the back, I have All-Data and i am constantly on it trying to figure crap out, lately Ive been keeping the shop heat at 60 or so, unless they are painting. even at 60 i have a boat under the radient and you sweat your but off inside of it. it works well getting the moisture out of the boats...it still sometimes takes a month or so though. the best way i find though is the dehumidifier for a week or so covered.
I have reasons for wearing all the clothes and not for filling my vehicles up with gas, its in case I break down on the freeway and have to walk or if i sell the car i dont want the buyer to get a full tank of gas, sure as sht last time i filled one up at 4.00 a gallon.....it sold lol BTW, If anyone ever needs info on your personal car, All-Data will have it you could either call me ar I'll print the info and Fax ------------- "the things you own will start to own you" |
