Don't know if you guys get the news about our little country, but friday, our prime minister anounced the dismissal of the entire government.
After more than one and a half year of argueing after the elections in 2007, we finally had a government and now, this government fell... The reason for the dismissal is the interference of our prime minister in the judicial system... He exerced pressure on some of our top magistrates in order to force the sell of the Fortis Bank Holding to the french banking group BNP Parisbas... As the base of democracy rests on the separation of the powers, the government could no longer stand... ------------- - Gun control means: using BOTH hands! - Money doesn't make one happy, but when it rains cats and dogs, it's still better to cry in a Porsche than on a bicycle... |

Is the opposition prepared to govern or do you go back to an election? We are headed for a similiar situation in Canada . We heard that Fortes was close to insolvent and needed a bailout similiar to the US banks. Our news made it sound more like a conflict between dutch and French groups. ------------- 70 Mustang project |

Our banks needed a bailout too. Opposition and the shareholders claimed Fortis was sold too quickly to BNP Parisbas and too cheap. The shareholders felt they weren't consulted on the matter and sued the government for these reasons.
For the moment we don't know what the scenario will be... New elections or an interim government (would be the second interim government in one year...  )
Pretty ironic is that our prime minister had 800.000 personal votes thanks to his campaign that was built around "good government"

Believe it or not, there are people here that say to annex the dutch speaking north to Holland and the french speaking south to France...
And Brussels independent capital of Europe (like Monaco). With all the sh*t going on in this country lately... Well in the media today, they report two different scenario's for the moment:
1. Implementing an interim government lead by one of our former prime ministers... and continue to work untill the normal elections in 2011. 2. Implmenting an interim government and have new elections as soon as possible (toghether with the elections for the european government in june 2009) ------------- - Gun control means: using BOTH hands! - Money doesn't make one happy, but when it rains cats and dogs, it's still better to cry in a Porsche than on a bicycle... |

Doug, we do have a monarchy, but they only have protocol power... So, our king can't help us there... Too bad, cause he's a good guy.

Update on our government soap...
Well the coalition worked all weekend to find a solution... They came up with this: We have a new prime minister. One of the "Old crocodiles" as we call them here has taken the burdon of replacing our dissmissed prime minister. Here's the problem... Because of all the f*ck ups, one of the coalition partners backed out, so the government does not have a majority anymore... Opposition is having a field day over this and want to have new elections in june 2009, toghether with the European elections. But the "reinstated" present government want to continue their (to me bad) work till the normal elections in 2011... So, in a nutshell, we're not out of the woods quite yet

Kris, one of my friends spent some time over in Europe and I asked him yesterday where was the best place and he answered Belgium, he said the people were the friendliest and would invite you to talk politics in thier back yard over a Belgian Budwieser...maybe i wont cancel my trip.... oh yeah, he said the older Germans still denied the big H, they said it didnt happen
