My 80 Ski has a bent pylon, which I don't think is normal but I'd like your thoughts on it. It shouldn't affect usability since it actually matches the angle of the engine cover. In addition, it's missing the eye that goes into the top of the pylon if anyone knows how to obtain one. | The bend in the pylon is normal. Good luck on finding an eye for the pylon as I hear they are hard to come by. Just get a machine shop to turn an "spool" like is used on the newer boats. |

Most of the wakeboard kids who get a hold of the older nautiques just hacksaw the ring right off of the pylon . I have only seen a few that actually tapped out the holding pins and saved them . Your best bet is the machine shop

i had no luck in finding one for the barracuda.
so i had a machine shop custom fabricate one out of polished stainless steel. it took forever & 200 bucks to get it done but it turned out perfect,in fact it looks better than the original brass loop & hook. the shop owner has the spec's on a computer disc file,and can easily produce another one. Mine was broken and I repaired same by welding the ring eye back onto the hook. I weld quite a lot when I'm home, and it is a simple job. A lot more grinding after the weld than actual welding.
Machine shops do pretty work and very strong, but if you don't have the time and are broke like the rest of us show a picture to a welder (bring a six pack), let him weld out and fit into the pylon, then you can take it from there. I grinded, polished, painted mine black and was back skiing in a few hours. Is this a trick question? Sorry, but the problem with e-mails or Forums is you can't tell. My tow eye was carbon steel...but the old welds may have used brass rods if that's what's throwing you off. Brass rods (60% Cu) are very common and have a 63,000 psi tensile strength and only require a 600 Deg F torch...not a welding machine. the loop & hook or toweye on my 68 barracuda was made from 3/4" solid brass.i could'nt find any weld shop to repair it.
i dont know,is there a difference between welding and brazing 3/4" brass ? dont beleave me ? call welco he's the one who had to drill out the old eye from the pylon and fabricate a new one.he'll tell you it was solid brass not carbon steel.if it was it would NOT have broken in the 1st place. ------------- kenny g |

Brass welding is old style and requires a lot of talent....I know i can't do it and most welders I'm around haven't done it for years.
When digging into an old CC you never know what you'll find (you had brass...I had carbon steel), but it's always fun to work on. I removed my eye in order to put a Skylon on it to Waleboard. The skylon is usually around 200 and has an eye for skiing. Just a thought. I have a small shop with some descent equipment and still ended up destroying the hook and eye on my 79. Turned a newer style spool on the lathe though and like it a lot better.
