i know this has come up several times here but i'm not having much luck with this sites search function.
351W no sterio, battery only used for starting and filling fat sacks. what battery should i get? i'm not looking to spend the money to get an optima. right now, i have an AC Delco voyager deep cycle. thanks, |

well you need a non-deep cycle battery version of the voyager or the optima, Dekka suppose to be decent, heard others like interstate batteries too.

| I've had a Red Top Optima in my boat for 4 years with no problems, and I have never put a charger on it (use it at least every other week in the winter). You might want to reconsider the no Optima thing. |

I don't know if it is a good battery or not, but the battery that came stock in my boat was a Nautilus and it lasted 8 years. BKH ------------- Livin' the Dream |

Phil,
You won't go wrong with ether the red top, yellow top or the marine blue top. All the optimas due to their design can handle lots of pounding and vibration. The red top is recommended for off road so it sure will handle the abuse of marine service. I'm running a red top in my Tique without any problems. The yellow is a cross between starting and deep cycle so if you are filling sacs, it's not a bad choice. Yes, the blue tops are a deep cycle and should be used for such but are also listed as a dual purpose. The blue top does have the stud terminals as well as the lugs. | There are 2 versions of the blue top, one is dual (like the yellow) and the other is deep cycle. My Optima that has lasted so long is a red top, no stereo in that boat so no need for a deep cycle. |

well, in the end i cheaped out and got a everstart maxx marine from walmart. 875 CA's. I figured since i'm planning on a new boat next year it wasn't worth to spend the extra cash.
so i picked up my boat from storage and threw the new battery in it. she fired up pretty quick after her long beauty rest. but she was ticking for a while until the oil got up there then she quieted down. the valves were probably ticking for 20 seconds or so... i took a few hot laps around my lake and took my 7 month old on his first boat ride. boat ran perfect as i expected. for some reason i always hold my breath when i go to fire her up for the first time of the season. but after she starts, i'm reassured again that a correct winterization pays off. ------------- |

Deep cycle batteries do not have high amp delivery capability, so they do not work well for starting a V8 engine. They are good fro trolling motors & stereos, however. ------------- “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” Ben Franklin |

To clarify (I can do that; he's my dad  ):
Deep cycle batteries are designed for low amp draws over extended amounts of time, starting batteries are designed for high amp draw in a very short time. i do find it helpful to have the blue top d34m with the extra ring terminal spots for stereo hookup and whatever else i want, its funnny how the red top is 3 yr free replacement and the blue is 18 months...i always get them free replacement in my diesel 7.3 since it just kills batteries like a duck running into steel shot. ------------- 1989 ski nautique ,1991 barefoot nautique, 1993 Mustang Cobra 1998 5.0 Magazine shootout invitee |
