Yesterday I removed and replaced the impeller on an 88 2001 sn. After reading on the forums I thought it was a good idea to do so just to be on top of the boats maint. The impeller I removed had no damage or obvious wear. But the veins were alot more softer than the new and angled in the direction of rotation. Those two things seem like they would be normal occurences, so my question is did I waste my time or should this thing be swapped out every now and to maintain a good maint program?

I am in no way an expert, but mine was the same way. I have pictures on my post from last week.It is better to be safe then sorry, you would never want to starve the engine of cool water. I am sure one of the other guys will chime in, there are some amazing mechanics on this site...

I agree,better safe than sorry.I take mine out every year when I winterize.You didn't waste your time doing it because there are no symptoms,all of a sudden your overheating and your not going to have it happen when your in your driveway.Keep the old one for a spare in your boat.

Hey,
If the impeller starts to break apart you have to find and remove the pieces. Not that hard to do but I like to change it before they break apart and shut you down at the wrong time(when everyone want to ski and in the middle of the day). I also keep one handy in need of a change. It seems I can get about two seasons out of them.

Lonestar, you spent good money. The fact that the veins were taking a set indicates the impeller was starting to stiffen up. I'd be willing to bet if you bend the veins over and take a good look you'll see some tiny cracks starting. I'm like most here and change mine every other year and carry a spare.
