In the Fall of 2008 I had my 2004 Super Air Nautique (with 250 hrs) winterized, serviced and had a new impeller installed. The boat was running like a top at the end of last season and the service cost ~$600. The boat them stayed covered and unused all winter. A couple of weeks ago, I put the boat in the water and started it (as i normally do after the winter) which flushes out the water-safe anti-freeze. This time, after 5 minutes, the boat immediateley overheated. Assuming it was an impeller problem, i quickly turned it off, put the boat back on the trailer and returned it to the service center. The mechanic found 'trash in the strainer' which blocked the water intake. He cleaned it, back flushed the strainer and replaced the impeller, and then sent me the bill for $300. MY QUESTIONS: after winterization, replacement of the impeller and servicing last winter, shouldn't the service center have cleaned the strainer? Is there any way that I could have created this problem? Or should the service center cover the cost? It seems to me that the mechanics did not do what they were supposed to last season. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would call this a learning experience and pay closer attention to what you're getting for your money. I certainly don't think it's fair to point your finger at the service center when you really don't know what's going on with your boat.

For $600, I would think you would have a clean strainer to start with. Any chance all the crap got sucked in there in the 5 mins you ran the boat? Maybe they didn't clean it and it was all dried up, which would have to impede flow a lot more.   You need to learn to do that process yourself. It is easy and you know exactly what gets done.
And $600?!? geezuss....

I would ask about what exactly is "trash in the strainer". If it was really trash that you could have picked up in the lake, that is something you cannot prepare for.
If it was vegetation, then I would have to wonder if you could have picked up that much vegetation at the dock in that short of a period.
If it overheated due to blocked water flow, then replacing the Impeller is a must.

Thank you all for the replies so far. I appreciate the input. I'm a Nautique enthusiast, but unfortunately I'm not very technical. The impeller has been replaced and lines are clear and the boat runs great now. I'm concerned that the service center is not sharing the blame if it's possible that they were not thorough during the winterization and servicing.

Sounds like you picked up junk at the ramp/lake. It doesn't take much to do the job on the water flow. I have to agree that the service center really doesn't have any liability with trash in the strainer. A analogy would be buying a brand new set of tires and then driving over a nail. That wouldn't be the responsibility of the tire shop.

Stick with us here and let's see if we can guide you through some of the basic maintenance/winterization proceedures so you don't end up with the $600 bills!!!

BK $600 for that service its a lot of money (50-100 in parts rest is labor)unless other things than that were done in the service( oil change etc...),,, even If you are not a tech guy those are simple things to do, and with the help here you canīt go wrong....
Hope you ask soon for other issues before going to the service center

Wow - $600 and then $300 for a new impeller and clean strainer? I would also put myself in the category of 'not very technical', but the guys here have walked me through everything I've needed. Check here first!

Heck, I'd get into the mechanic buisness if I could get $600 for a winterization and $300 for an impeller change and to clean the strainer!

usually when you winterize depending how they do it, you empty the sea strainer because the water will usually sit in it, if they didnt empty it and left water in it it may have cracked. so i would really say they emptied it and you picked it up at the dock which in the spring the crap has a tendency to be near the docks?????

I'm not familiar with the 2004's but could they have re-installed the water pump backwards/reversed and used the strainer as a scapegoat to cover their mistake???

that's the problem if you don't know what your suppose to check before you go out in the boat then you end up spending lots-o-money because you are at their mursy and don't have a clue what questions to ask other than how much do I owe?

Certainly plausible they screwed up from the start. But no evidence to that left now..

Do this stuff yourself. Think of it this way, You can eff it up cheaper than they can for you.
