Hi again every1 well winter is setting in here so time to spend some time tidying up the boat,
what i want to know is the Stripes down the side of the boat are mostly painted on, its faded and almost gone in some places, basicly want to remove them completely (much to i imagine a lot of peoples disgust) and put some sort of stick on graphic down the side maybe like the SAN graphic or just completely redo to original
anyway what i am wanting to know is how do i remove it, should i just wet sand it with some 800 and higher then Polish it, will the hull come out completely white and not ruin the paint?? any one done this, sorry if this has been asked before im useless at using the search on this site.
just another Question is where do people install there stereos in this, i have brought a CMD5 clarion unit

Yes, you can wetsand the paint from the side.
Oven cleaner also works for getting the paint off.
My opinion only - Air Nautique stickers look silly on these boats.
If you want to redo the original, trace a pattern of the original lettering before you remove the paint. You will need for a stencil.

I'm with you Brian, and I am sure we can depend on Pete to concur.
Morgan B The path I took to redo the Graphics is to get good digital photos and have a sign maker make you some gerber maskings of the lettering

MorganB,
I've found a vendor who has the original 1983 graphics on file. What someone else has done is repaint the stripes and then overlay a white decal set. Price is $585 shipped for a complete decal set (minus the gold '2001'). Not cheap but will look very original.

Morgan,
I just repainted my 83. I went back original. If you are going back with the stripes I would suggest that you sand out any bad scratches in the paint but only lightly sand the rest. This way you will have lines to follow when you are taping off for your new paint. Just my .02

BJ,
I concure!! LOL!
The digital picture route however can be a dangerous method. The picture being a straight on to the hull side will not follow the exact curvature of the hull. When the Gerber mask is laid flat on the hull you will end up with a big "smiley face". The way to truely follow this curvature is to get a tracing of the original then the vinyl shop can scan it.

for the stereo if you have a globe box install it there...and for the speaker I saw here one doing some kind of boxes to put on the walls in order to avoid punching a hole on the comb pads...

Really good idea but that in NZD is over $1000, i can get the hole boat vinal Wraped with what ever i want on it for under that here in NZ
thanks for all the ideas i know everyone is real kean on the orignal look im not fussed ither way i can understand your side though, just want it to look good, good idea though of tracing the words then painting the 3 stripes and getting the name printed and stuck on seams like the simplest.
if i removed completly i would prob do something differnt, really worried on how hard it will be to sand it all of completly though anyone done it??
on the head unit, no i odnt have a glove box, wish i did though and in the process of redoing the dash i may consider glassing one into the top. some twat b4 me though has already cut out holes in the sides for 6 x9's so i really have no option there
thanks again for your coments they are really helping
