| I have a 79 SN that is a project boat,It has many cracks and blisters in various places from being left in the water for years..Needs new gelcoat all over... where do i start... what are the costs involved diy vs pro? is this even something that a diy type should attempt?.I am not a pro with a sander or spraygun, but am not scared to get my hands dirty.I might consider letting someone reputable do this if i could afford to,Since I found this forum a few days ago in a short time I have learned alot more about these boats... From Searching posts seems like more than a few have put new gelcoats on.Thanks in advance any help is much appreciated. |

Welcome Luck79. Be sure and throw some pictures up when you get a chance. We Love Pictures! As for Gel, have you tried the search feature yet? Not your typical diy IMO, but many have done it. | luck79 I am in the process of rebuilding my 82 from scratch. I did the entire floor myself but wanted to make sure the paint job looked professional so I hired someone local. I am in NC and the guy doing the paint job is in Smithfield. I should have it back by Friday and will let you know how it turns out but from what I can tell the guy really knows what he is doing. I would be glad to give you his info. |

Not that a woman can't do gel coat work, but it's not something we read about every day. Since a member here, Sanity (aka Michelle) pulled back the blond hair into a ponytail, got out the sander, read a bunch of books on applying gelcoat, and sprayed her own gelcoat on her Mustang project, I think a lot of people have gained courage to do their own work. I'm not saying anyone can do it, and Michelle does seem to have a talent for it. I'm just saying she's given a lot of people the courage to try. I say if you are talented with your hands, you can figure it out.
Some people do prep and paint the hulls, particularly when they are pretty well gone. It's a lot less labor than applying gelcoat. Still, the gelcoat is more durable over the long haul, and probably easier to maintain once it's done. BKH ------------- Livin' the Dream |

Ditto on Brian's (BKH) above post. If Michelle can do it you can too!!! Don't paint the boat. Gel really is the proper way. Yes it's more work but the end result will give you the performance the gel provides. I have wood painted/varnished boats so I do have some background to this fact. Painting is just a half a**** non professional way to do it. Do sit down and do some searching/reading. If you have any questions we're here. Matt at Race City Marine in Mooresville / Doolie can do Gel Coat work. You can find his number by going to www.racecitymarine.com. He and Reid P have a place in Doolie, NC off of Hwy 150 near the Lake Norman High School. He is a great guy and he and Reid P have a great love for these older boats. Gel is the way to go.
