Trying to replace packing. I've got the nuts apart but I can't see where the packing goes. Do you just wrap the new packing around the shaft and tighten the nuts back together.????

Some make three wraps, others make three rings of material, alternating the links 180 degrees.
I've seen both methods work.

Best dig out the old stuff first, and don't put a burr in on the shaft.

I'm replacing the stuffing box on mine with a shaft seal this year so I don't have to mess with adjusting it all of the time and to kepp the bilge area a little drier.
