I'm a first time boat owner, just got a 2001 SAN w/310 HP. Bought out of state, from owner who used her infrequently. 115 Hours. Started fine on test day, and 2 days later when we got her home. 2 weeks go by and no juice in either battery (DieHard Marine purchased 8/07). I'm thinking they're toast from extended periods of non-use. If they need to be replaced, I'll go w/Optima (While there are probably instances of every battery brand lasting several years, as evidenced in forum, what matters to me is consistency in a brand and its design). My question is, which Optimas to buy? Price is always a factor but as they should last for several years, it is not the main factor. We've got the 1/2/Both battery switch. Don't mind switching it for float times to run stereo which is only 180W. No tower speakers as yet but may add and would upgrade stereo if necessary. Have Perfect Pass and built in Ballast. Main concern is starting power and reliability (Lake is 2 1/2 hours away so we'll be going every other weekend for summer, and I don't want to have to charge the batteries every time we go.) Any thoughts on 2 Optima battery configuration, for example: one "dual purpose" and one "deep cycle"? Thanks,
Wake Cat

AT,
Since you have the "perko" switch then I'd use it as designed with a starting battery and a deep cycle. The dual purpose is a compromise and not needed.
Welcome to the site. Make sure you get some pictures and a story posted into diaries section.

Pete,
I'll get some pictures posted, and we're developing quite a story... So the "starting battery" would get recharged as we drive the boat? What about the deep cycle? Could I trouble you to briefly run down when I'd set "perko" switch to 1 "Start?" 2 "Deep" or "Both" ? Sounds like an Optima Red and Blue would fit vs 2 yellows?
thanks again,
Allen

Allen,
I believe the correct procedure (if wrong, I'm sure other members will jump in) is to start on #1 (start), run the stereo on #2 (deep cycle) when the engine isn't running and then for charging use the "both" position. What I don't know is how the different charge rates of the two different battery types is handled with the Perko!! Maybe they need to be charged at different times?? Guys, help me out here!

Thanks. I got a terrific deal on BlueTop Optimas, one Starter and one Dual Purpose/Deep Cycle. Backed her into the water and she started right up. We'll be going back for the weekend. I'll get some pictures and get story posted.
I'm thinking I'll need to start/run on "both" most of the time unless I can switch to both from #1 (Starter) while running. And use #2 for hang times in the cove.
Thanks for your help.
Allen
