When I took the boat out last weekend I took on a lot more water than usual. I think I need to replace my rudder packing. The shaft packing is new and didn't look like it was leaking. I know the rudder has the original packing.

I want to use the Gortex stuff but not sure what size I need to get.

Anyone know what size packing I need. Any tips on doing this?

Tighten the packing first before you go to the trouble of re packing. Unlike the prop shaft which is rotating, the rudder packing really doesn't wear that much. You may even be able to get to the packing nut without even removing the gas tank. Repacking it would require the tank to be pulled.

If you do repack, it's best to measure the size due to the inconsistencies through the years.
